Spellings & Pronunciations

MY ancestrial grandparents who immigrated thru New Orleans to Kentucky in the 1850s from the Alsace region of Europe spelled the Klaber name with an e as opposed to the now used a, KLEBER. The spelling was changed by their children to promote the pronunciation to the long a sound that is correct. The e had a right to left accent mark above on the e which makes the e pronounced as a long a. Thus the pronunciation as Klay-bur. The tombstones of my great-great grand parents, located in the Catholic Cemetery in Falmouth, KY have the names carved as JACOB KLEBER and ELIZABETHA KLABER.

Jean-baptist Klaber (General)
Was Napoleons chief of staff during the Napoleonic wars. He was left in charge of Egypt when Napoleon left Egypt to return to France. Klaber was assassinated in Egypt soon after Napoleon left. In the center of Straussbourgh France (his birth town) now there is the Place Klaber which has a statue of General Klaber mounted on a horse at the center of the square. His name is carved in the Arche du Triumphe
in Paris and the street approaching the Arche form the south in named in his honor. Avenue Kleber.
