Victoria (Keppler) Merl of California United States was born on August 24, 1933 in New York, NY, and died at age 91 years old on January 15, 2025 in Berkeley, CA.
Don't remember his parents names they were killed during the war when their home in Offenbach was bombed by allied bombers.
Otto was my grandfather and was born in Offenbach, Germany. He had many brothers and sisters all of which emigrated to the US in the 1920's. He settled in Chicago and married a German girl he met there in 1924. My mother was born on June 1, 1925. My grandmother became very ill shortly thereafter and took my mother back to Germany to meet the relatives. My grandmother died there from diabetes in 1925 and my mother traveled back to the US by ship, by herself at three years old, to be picked up by my grandfather in New York.
My grandfather was a very accomplished wood pattern maker which he made a decent living at. He was a soft spoken, gentle man. I never heard him say a word in anger.
He married a German woman he met in Chicago and remained married to her until he died. Around 1950 he decided to open a delicatessen in Chicago which was very successful.
In 1967 he had a stroke which left him a paraplegic for seven years until he choked on some food and died in 1974.
He should be membered as a gentle, kind, hardworking family man who raised a family with love and understanding despite difficult events and two world wars.
