Martha Elizabeth Casto Keffer
I have two old studio photographs belonging to the BREININGER Family of Pennsylvania and Illinois. The first is a photograph of Freddie C. BREININGER taken at the John Schofield Studio in Frankford, PA in the 1880's with Freddie identified as 5 1/2 months old at the time. The second photograph is one of Mrs. F. L. B. KEFFER who is the sister of Mrs. Sallie BREININGER. This photograph was taken at the Siegel Cooper & Co. Studio in Chicago, IL. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900's with Mrs. KEFFER likely in her 30's or 40's at the time it was taken.
Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding this family:
Frederick “Freddie” Conrad BREININGER was b. 30 Aug 1883 in Philadelphia, PA to parents Frederick Johanes George BREININGER (b. 1856) and Sallie CASTO (1861-1941). Freddie was one of 6 children born to this couple including Freddie; Laura; Mabel; George Leslie; Stella; and Mabel BREININGER, all born between 1883 and 1894. Freddie married Bertha Lucy OSTRANDER (1891-1969) on 20 Apr 1912 in California, and they had two children including Dorothy L. BREININGER (1913-1924) and Paul Frederick BREININGER (1917-1965). Freddie died 20 Aug 1979 in San Jacinto, CA and is buried in the San Jacinto Valley Cemetery in that city. Freddie’s son Paul had two sons, Alan Reid BREININGER (b. 1947) and Corey Lee BREININGER (b. 1948), both living in San Diego, CA in the past.
Freddie’s mother was Sarah D. “Sallie” CASTO b. 26 Oct 1861 in Mantua, NJ to parents Abraham E. CASTO (1832-1880) and Susannah “Susie” or “Susan” T. BINGHAM (1838-1917) who were married about 1859 in Gloucester Co., NJ. Sallie was one of 6 children born to this couple including Sallie; Laura; George H.; Georgianna; Jessie; and Richard CASTO, all born between 1861 and 1873. Sallie’s father was married previously and had three additional children including Mary Ella CASTO (1854-1876); Martha Elizabeth CASTO (b. 1856); and Baby Girl CASTO (b. 1857). Sallie married Frederick George BREININGER on 15 Dec 1881 in Bridesburgh, PA and they had 6 children noted above. Sallie died 18 Nov 1941 in Beverly Hills, CA and is buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, CA.
