CALVIN HUDDLESTON
Calvin Huddleston was born at Kanawha Falls on the Kanawha River, Kanawha County, West Virginia, August 29, 1839. He died at Grangeville, Idaho, November 30, 1925, aged 86 years and 3 months, after a brief illness. He followed boating in early manhood, and was for awhile manager for the Snow Hill Company in West Virginia.
In 1862 at the age of twenty three, he came west to Oregon by ox-team. Two brothers preceded him to the west. He did placer mining in Oregon, California, Idaho and elsewhere. He made three trips to Alaska, on the second of which he went far into the interior with no companions but his dogs. He engaged in trapping in later years up until last winter. He was a typical mountaineer, the city had no lure for him. In his last illness he wished to go to the hills. He never married and was not a member of any church or fraternal order.
He is survived by three nieces and one nephew in the east. Respected by all who knew him, he was a manly man, just and generous, strong and courageous. His was the life of simplicity and sincerity, foolish fades and frivolous follies, he was free from and what ever was his beliefs, conceptions, ideals, and opinions, they are known only to God.
Funeral was December 3, 1925, from E.S. Hancock undertaking parlors. W.N. Knox, minister officiating. A male quartet consisting of Messrs: Barber, Taylor, Ayears, and Bell, furnished the music. Interment at Grangeville Cemetery. Songs sang were Abide With Me and Farewell Brother. Rock of Ages was sung at the grave.

My grandfather was a quiet, strong man. He loved New Mexico history and he and his family were a part of that early history. He was married to Dorothy Blanche Huddleston, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Gasman in Stanley New Mexico. They owned a hotel and livery stable in Stanley. My grandmother and her sister Sarah were among the first public school teachers in New Mexico. My grandmother taught at Lamy, New Mexico before marrying my grandfather. My grandfather stayed on the Huddleston family homestead on Glorieta Mesa after his brothers moved away. He and my grandmother had one son, John Perry Huddleston. John married Charlotte Rose Cannon, also of Gorieta Mesa. They had three children, Pamela Sue Huddleston, Dorothy Pearl Huddleston, and Perry Gus Huddleston. John and his wife continued to run the family ranch until selling most of it in the late 1970's. Perry Gus Huddleston still lives on Glorieta Mesa on the last remaining piece of the old Huddleston homestead. Dorothy Pearl married Hollis Vaughn and lives on a ranch in Hildago County. Pamela Sue married Peter Witzemann and now lives in Aztec, NM.
I loved my grandfather very much and he left me a proud legacy of honesty and hard work. He embodied the spirit of territorial New Mexico.

My name is Wendy. I was married to Micheal Ray Huddleston, born March 20, 1973 and grew up in Bolivar, TN. His mother's name is Debby, her mother's name was Wilma Spencer. He & I are no longer in contact with each other, but we have a son, Caleb (13 yrs old), whom I'd love to know his father's side of the family. Do these names sound familiar to anyone?
