1860 Spring Mill Village Plat
1860 Spring Mill Village Plat, owners of the area that is now Spring Mill State Park, Lawerance County, Indiana. Timothy Hixon my Great, great grandfather, at one time own the property located on the North half, of the Southwest 1/4 of Section 33, a total of 80 Acres. The parks INN, sets on the Southwest end of his parcel, and the Nature Center sets on the Northwest end, beginning at the first Shelter house in the Valley, than East 2,640 feet over the Lake and beyond was his parcel of land. Timothy and his sons built and operated a Grist and Saw Mill where the present stream and bridge over the lake sets. They were removed after the State bought the property in 1933, and the family home is now the Cooper's Shop in the pioneer village, the wooden mill was torn down. On the plat you can see the Railroad as a heavy dashed line, the stream from Hamer Cave as a solid line, and the present roadway in 1860 as a double line. Hugh Hamer's family own West of Timothy Hixon Parcel and the Geo Donaldson South of him, James Harvey, North, and Thomas Hall, West. The other Hixons on the plat were siblings of Timothy. He and his wife, some of his children are buried in the Hamer Cemetery.
Ephraim B. Hixon
Photo was taken at the saw mill, just before the state of Indiana aquired Spring Mill village in the mid 30's and convert it to the state park that is there today. Ephraim was the son of Timothy Hixon and Lucinda J. Davis he was born 01 May 1868, Lawerance Co; IN. and died 10 Sep 1960, Washington Co; IN. married Lydia M. Hawk and had five daughters Ethel, Ruby, Alice, Ellen and Edith. The homestead, saw mill and Grist Mill that Timothy Hixon and his sons built and ran is beneath the waters of the lake in Spring Mill State Park near the existing dam, his home was moved to the village and is now known as the Coopers Shop. Ephraim was an exceptional tall man and was said to be over seven foot in height.

Located in Hamer Cemetery in Spring Mill State Park, 3 miles east of Mitchell, Lawrence County, Indiana.
A son of Benjamin Hixon
This is a son of Benjamin Hixon. Benjamin moved to Kansas in 1865, after the Civil War. Date is approximate. We think it was taken somewhere close to 1900. We are not sure of which of Ben's 6 sons this is, but we know that he only came to visit his Indiana cousins twice.
Hixon Brothers
Sons of Timothy Hixon. One is General Jackson Hixon. We aren't sure which one is the General, and we are unsure of which brother the other is. They moved from Lawrence County, Indiana to Kansas after the Civil War.
Timothy Hixon
Timothy Hixon was considered to be one of the pioneers of part of the land which is now Spring Mill State Park in southern Indiana. He bought his 80 acres from James C. Lynn in about 1845. His land was on Mill Creek, North of Spring Mill Village on what is now Trail Two. The millstones were cut by Timothy from limestone found in the surrounding hills. The Mill race was 80 rods long and was supplied with water by a low diversion dam, traces of which could be seen until much of his 80 acre tract was covered by the lake of the resoration project in the 1930's. The race was partly in stone and was almost entirely constructed by him. He was a large man with light hair and blue eyes. A hard working man, he operated both the saw and grist mills himself. He took one-eighth of the grist or lumber as his toll, acording to the custom of the time." Paraphrased from "Outdoor Indiana", July 1936 pg 12.

John H. Doyal, of Saint Elmo, Hamilton County, Tennessee, being first duly sworn, upon his oath deposes and says:
I am 78 years of age and was born in Walker county, Georgia. I came to Walker county, Georgia, at the age of twelve years; I removed across the line into Hamilton county, Tennessee, in 1876.
I know the applicant, David H. Hixon, and live about three miles from him. I know his father George Hixon, and knew his grandfather. Dave Hixon, and all his brothers, they being the sons of Tim Hixon, the Cherokee arrow maker. I knew Tim Hixon by general reputation as an arrow maker of the Cherokee tribe, and of their blood.
I have know this Hixon family in Walker county for three of four generations, and know that it has always been generally understood by those best acquainted with them that they are of the Cherokee Indian blood.

Asa M. Higgins, of Rossville, Walker county, Georgia being first duly sworn, upon his oath deposes and says:
I am 80 years of age and was born in Jackson county, Georgia, June 18, 1833. I have lived In Walker county, Georgia, 75 Years. My Father was Caleb Higgins who lived near Lafayette, in Walker County and helped to remove the Indians in 1838.
I remember when the Indians were here, and knew some of them, Including Chief John Ross, who lived near in Rossville, and Second Chief Dick Wilkinson.
I have known the applicant, David H. Hixon, for many years. He is of good character and fully entitled to belief. He has been justice of the peace at Rossville, Walker County, Georgia, for about five years, and has lived in the county all his life, practically.
I have known applicant's father, George Hixon, who also resides in this county, and knew applicant's grandfather, David Hixon, who also lived in this county, away back years before the civil war.
I also knew by reputation applicant's great-grandfather, Tim Hixon, who lived on Lookout Mountain and in the valleys east of it. He was generally known as an arrow maker of the Cherokee Indian tribe, and to be of their blood, and recognized as belonging to their tribe.
This same Hixon family have been in Walker County, and I have been personally acquainted with then all along since I was young, many years before the civil war
