Spellings & Pronunciations

The name was spelled both "Hinek" and "Hineq" in church records in Croatia.  The "Hinek" spelling was the form used by the family members in their native language.  The letter "k" was not used in the Latin Church records at the time, so some births, baptisms, marriages, and deaths record family members with the surname "Hineq."
There are known to also be Hinek family members in the United States of America that originated in the area known today as Poland that changed their surname from "Hynek" to "Hinek" after immigrating to the U.S.

Nationality & Ethnicity

There are at least two known origins for current "Hinek" family lines.  There are quite likely others that should be added here.
One is in the Virovitica-Podravina area of Croatia.  There are still several generations of Hineks living in this area confirmed as of 2013.  At least one member of the family (Pavo Hinek) immigrated to the United States of America in 1904 and his wife (Marija Hinek - née Wencl or Wenzel) and children followed several months later.  They settled in the U.S. state of Wisconsin near Milwaukee.
The other immigrated to the United States from the area known today as Poland.  This family changed its Surname from "Hynek" to "Hinek" at some point after arriving in the U.S.  Some members settled in Wisconsin and others in New York. Hinek family members are known to have originated from Poland and Croatia.
