the following tradition about her great-grandfather.
"William came from England. His boat was wrecked on the Virginia Capes and he had to swim to shore"

Hi Sharon,
2
I just found something today and was wondering if you have this or are aware of it at all. I have the microfilm for Greenbrier Co. VA tax lists
starting in 1782, which I ordered to look for the Clendinen brothers and in 1786 WILLIAM HINCHMAN shows up! By 1798 William Sr and
William Jr. are there, along with a John Hinchman. From what I have on the family, the first William must be the father from England??
Cathy
This is what I found in the Greenbrier Co. Tax list. Some of it doesn't make sense to me. In 1796 William Jr. doesn't show up but William Sr. has
two taxable males??
The Library of Virginia has the land records online so I am checking them out also but it takes a while to find and print.
By 1810 they are all in Monroe Co. VA. I don't know if that is because they moved there or because where they were became Monroe Co. I'm not
that well versed on the county changes in that area at the time. I just ordered a program called 'Animap'
which will hopefully help me out there. It's supposed to show the county changes year by year if I can figure out how to work my way though it
after I get it.
I will check for Wood/Woods when I get a chance. The library is closed next week because of the holiday so if I don't get back to you on it feel
free to remind me, because I have probably forgotten.
It does seem that William had a brother John according to this tax list.

Notes for Elizabeth Kirwan?:
Sharon,
Thanks for your recent emails. The 'Henchman' info was new; however, I don't know how Thomas connects to the family in America. According
to DNA tests, John Henchman was NOT related to David Henchman in Australia who claims a direct line to the Bishop. John IS related to the
New Jersey Hinchmans - 24 of 25 markers.
Ken Hinchman [Milton] and Walter Hinchman [Ulysses] were both tested, but don't match. Ken is supposed to make arrangements for two other
Hinchman men - my husband Joe [William III] and David Hinchman [John, s/o William I] to be tested, but has not.
The Maryland info I have seen, but I appreciate all that you have sent to me. William Hinchman II of Logan Co. letters are in the current
newsletter. So many Hinchmans are descended from him.
If you learn anything different about John K's middle name, PLEASE let me know. I have always seen his name John K. According to some info,
William I's wife Elizabeth [John K's grandmother] was the daughter of John and Mary Kirwan. I am trying to find a connection to the Kirwan
family.
Children of William Hinchman and Elizabeth Kirwan? are:
+ 3 i. Elizabeth Ellice3 Hinchman, born 1763 in Dorchester Co MD.
+ 4 ii. William Hinchman III, born February 29, 1768 in CHESAPEAKE BAY, DORCHESTER CO

Henry Clay Ragland had this to say about the Hinchman Family (Swain, p.
66-67):
"William Hinchman settled near the mouth of Rich Creek on the farm once
owned by his son, James Harvey Hinchman, about the year 1814. He was the
son of William Hinchman, an English sailor, and was born in Dorchester,
Maryland, about 1770. He was too young to enter the army at the time of
the Revolution, but was in hearing of the guns at Yorktown, and was
familiar with the stirring events of the time when America desired to be
independent of English domination. He moved to Montgomery County,
Virginia, now Monroe County, West Virginia, about the close of the last
century, when he married Mary Ann Perry, a daughter of John Perry, who
had emigrated from the north of Ireland. After several of his children
were born, he came, as we have seen, to the mouth of Rich Creek. His
sterling worth was seen and appreciated by the people and he was soon
made one of the justices of Cabell County, and upon the organization of
Logan County he became a member of its first County Court. His children
by his first marriage were John K., who married the daughter of Ben
White; Cyrus, who married a daughter of F. R. Pennell; Hiram, who married
a daughter of Thomas Riggan; Milton, who married a daughter of Ben Cary;
William, who first married a Miss Seymore, then a Miss Hatfield, and as a
third wife, a Miss Chapman; Dr. Ulysses, who married a Miss McDonald;
James Harvey, who married a Miss Gore; Elizabeth, who married Ben Smith;
Amanda, who married Robert Clendenin; Sarah, who married Ira Chambers,
and Mero, who married Levi Gore. After the death of his first wife,
William Hinchman Sr. married Nancy Stollings, and the children of this
marriage were Floyd, who married first a Miss Chambers, and after her
4
death, a Miss Mangus; Nancy Ann, who married Joseph Scaggs; Penelope, who
married George Claypool; Risby, who married Thomas Nelson Ballard; and
Edna, who died single. Of the first children of William Hinchman, John
K., Cyrus, Hiram and Milton moved to the State of Michigan, William moved
to the county of Cabell, Dr. Ulysses was a practicing physician and held
many offices of public trust, and was several times elected as a member
to the West Virginia Legislature; James Harvey was a successful farmer, a
member of the West Virginia Legislature, and at different times held
other important offices in the county.

LOGAN COUNTY PETITION, DECEMBER 9TH, 1824
A list of the petitioners is listed at the bottom of this petition.
Logan Co November the 12th 1824
The memorial of part of the inhabitants of Logan County to the Honorable Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Virginia
respectfully showeth; That your honorable bodies at their last session, after forming the said county of Logan, appointed certain Commissioners to
locate the site for the Public Buildings of said new County. Four of whom met at the house of WILLIAM HINCHMAN in the month of March but
could not agree in opinion as to the most eligeable situation for said purpose. The Commissioners again met, five of them, in June and again
separated without being able to come to any conclusion; two of them being for the Islands of Guyandotte only 26 mles from the western boundary
of the county and two of them were in favor of John Cook's place, situated about 49 miles from the western and 54 miles from the eastern line of
the county. The other Commissioner expressed himself in favor of the mouth of Huffs Creek; which is situated, nearly halfway between the above
mentioned places. The Commissioners again, met, in August, after being duely notified as the affadavits o----d will show; and unanimously (a
majority that attended,) or the Report that accompanies this will shew; decided, that a place therein mentioned near the mouth of said Huffs Creek
was in their opinion the most eligable for the purpose of aforesaid; Your Abamorialists, now concured the question of Locations of our Seat of
Justice; as entirely set at rest; as they had reason to believe this decision met with the approbation of at least five of the Commissioners; and altho
your petitioners were entirely of opinion that the locations aught to have been at Cooks yet as the Commissioners had decided otherwise; they were
disposed, peaceably to acquiesce in their decison..... They have however found with great surprise that the County Court composed of a majority of
Majistrates from the next end of the County refused to receive the report of the Commissioners; That located the Seat for Court of Justices and
Sumpream Court being to be held, shortly after, we flattered ourselves with securing immediate relief from the Honorable Judge in this case, but to
our great mortification, he was prevented by sickness from attending, at the time appointed. He has since held a Special Court for the purpose, of
trying the prisoners confined by the Sherif. But of course --- not do any other business your memorealists still however flattered themsleves that the
commissioners report would be ultimately received because they considered the court was bound to comply with all Acts of your honorable Houses
and because the report was in all respects favourable to the west end of the County; and in perfect obedience to the Act passed by your honorable
Houses at their last session. They regret their disapointment and are compelled in defence of their rights, thus to address your honorable Bodies as
they find their neibours in the West end of the County industrously and anxiously useing every endeavor to procure signatures to a petetion
praying your honorable Houses to locate the seat at the Islands of Guyandotte, only 26 miles from the wester extremity of the County and at least
80 or 90 miles from the eastern line.... They are also the more urjed to this measure as they find that several of their neibours in the east allure'd by
the promise of a new County; have signed the petition in favour of the Islands; which they believe is in direct oppossition to a Solemn Act of your
Honorble Houses....... Your memorialists there for Respectfully Pray your Honorable Houses, will be graciously pleased to confirm the Act of your
Commissioners, imployed by and under your Act as aforesaid; and who in conformety therewith, have executed their duty , to the full intent, and
meaning thereof.... Never the less should your honorable Houses be of opinion that any doubt remains as to the propriety of your commissions
decision; we pray you will be pleased in this case to appoint new Commissioners to examine the terrtory of our new County; a measure in our
opinion absolutely necessary; to enable them to do full justice to the inhabitants thereof and your petitioners as in duty will ever pray. JC JC JC

Hi Sharon,
The letters are all loaded up and ready to mail. Will do it either tomorrow (hopefully) or when I mail my bills within the next couple of days.
In the meantime, here are the three letters transcribed. Hopefully I got them right. What a bounty of information in them! (I've already contacted
the McDonald researchers that I could find and gave them the info on Minerva's death--second letter.
Cathy
NOTE: The following three letters were written by William Hinchman, (b. 29 Feb. 1768, Maryland), and sent to the family of Robert A.
Clendenen, who migrated to Cass Co. Michigan in 1848. I have added paragraphs and punctuation but have left the spelling as it appeared in the
letters. Jacie (Jackie) Clendenen Stork, granddaughter of Frank Leslie Clendenen, has the original letters, and has shared them with members of
the Clendenen family.

Logan County Va, March the 31st 1851
Dear Daughter, after my best respects to you and your Dear family—this will let you know that my family is enjoying a reasonable portion of
health at this time but as to myself I have not been well since the midle of January last and am ?donsey? yet altho some better—I hope this will
reach you and yours enjoying good Health and doing well for time and eternity—
You wanted me to let you know my age and your Mother’s. I was Eighty 83 the 29th day of this month past and your Mother was 56 years, 8
months, and 14 days old when she died. She Deceas’d the 15th of January 1832—
Now every letter I receive is beradeing our mountains but I first drew breath in as level a country as yours and as Agunish as yours and I have
since lived in the mountains of Va, a place that gave you breath and I do not doubt in the least Virginia sounds dear to you yet, for Maryland in
sweet to me now.
As to other things, in the first, I am getting along as well as ever I did in Worldly matters and I thought in ?Class meeting to day I was getting
along in Speritual matters, for I enjoyed myself well and was happy and I do thank the giver—We have had the warmest winter that I every new,
we have not had a tracking snow and only three cold days and nights –
Minerva McDonald, Wallace’s Wife died and was buried yesterday and has left three babes.
Now after this direct your letters to Logan County Va Virginia, Rich Creek Post Office. We have got an office at my house called Rich Creek and
Floyd is P. M.
The friends was well yesterday they were generally here at Class meeting – Our County abounds with Plenty although every thing is high here.
Would fill my sheet if it was not two hard for me to write, my children Craves for me to write to them but my hand trembles so much I cannot
write any longer therefore I must conclude by subscribing myself your affectionate Father till Death. William Hinchman.
To Amanda Clendenon.
NB? Please let the friends no to send there letters to Logan County Va, Rich Creek Post Office.

Dear son & daughter, after our best respects to you and Children this will let you know that at the present time we are in tolerable Health, thank
the giver of all good for continued favors to us and I hope this will find you and family well, altho I have little reason to hope from the reports I
hear that all is well, for I am told there is no doubt but Robert has the Consumption and if it is so I think it is seldom cured.
I began this the 19th and this is the 20th and to morrow is mail day, therefore I am trying this morning to write but I am hardly able to set up and I
am forced to make my letter short, but will tell you there is more Sickness here than ever was in one summer and there is a great many Deaths. I
think the friends is all well as far as I know at this time. Ulysses gets a plenty to do. He has this spring and summer wore out one good Horse and
has nearly wore out himself, he has more sick to attend to than he’s able to attend.
I woud ofain write more but my situation is such at this time that I cannot. My hand trembles so I must conclude at this time—
I want to hear from you how you are and how you are doing and direct your letter to Rich Creek post office, Logan County Virginia. This from
William and Nancy Hinchman—to Robt. and Amanda Clendenon.

in Monroe County Va, and died March 18, 1897 in Rush County, Indiana.
Notes for James Hinchman:
JAMES HINCHMAN was a native of Monroe County, Va., born January 24, 1800. He was the fourth in a family of eleven children born to John
and Sarah (Vinson) Hinchman, the former a native of Maryland, where the Hinchmans settled during the time of the Calverts. The latter was a
native of Shenandoah County, VA. At the age of fourteen, John Hinchmanremoved to Monroe County, Va., where he married Sarah Vinson,
where they continued to reside until their deaths. James Hinchman was reared amid the scenes incident to farm life, and owing to his limited
educational advantages was not enabled to attend school more than a year and a half during his youth. But in after life, byself- application, he
obtained a fair English education. On April 11, 1822, he chose for a life companion Nancy Nickell, daughter of George and Margaret (Nelson)
Nickell, natives of Monroe County, Va., where Mrs. Hinchman was born, September 5, 1804. At the time of hismarriage Mr. Hinchman received
$250 from his father, and with this money he resolved to seek a home in the west. He accordingly started for Indiana on horseback, and finally
purchased 160 acres of land in Section 14, Union Township, Rush County, Indiana, and returned for his young wife. They put what few cooking
utensils they had into a two-horse wagon and started overland to their far-off home in the western wilderness. Arriving here November 14, 1822,
they moved into a rude log cabin, which had been erected on one of his eighty-acre tracts. Soon afterward he built a more substantial house, in
which he lived happily for many years. When he arrived here he had some fears as to whether or not he would succeed, but he went to work with a
will and his first crop of corn averaged him ninety bushels to the acre. This assured him of success, and here solved to make Rush County his
future home. The family circle was blessed with fourteen children, viz.: George N., John T., Andrew, William N., Joseph V., James R., Carey,
Alvin B., Jesse G., Sarah, Robert N., Amos C., Margaret and Nancy, of whom George N., John T., Joseph V., James R., Sarah H., Margaret,
Alvin B., Carey, Amos C., Nancy, Jesse G., and Robert N. are still living. Mr. Hinchman began life a poor man, and after paying the expense of
his trip to this county he found he had only $10 left, which he expendedin provisions for the winter. He was very successful in his chosen
occupation, and at one time owned over 1,000 acres of land in Rush County, besides 2,200 acres in Missouri and Iowa. He was liberal with
hischildren, assisting them to get homes, and was a public-spirited man, encouraging, with time and money, railroads, canals, or any other
improvement for the benefit of the public. Politically, he was a Republican, and in 1844was elected to the Indiana Legislature, which position he
held two terms. He was Probate Judge of Rush County for three years, and held the office of County Commissioner two years. He was a firm
friend of the schools, and advocated the employment of the best teachers. On August 28,1883, he passed away a time honored pioneer and citizen.
He had been a member of the Christian Church since its organization in this county. His life companion still survives him, and is in remarkable
good health for one of her age - eighty-three years.

Hinchman, Joseph V.,the leading banker of Glenwood, Mills county, was born May 13, 1831, in Rush
county, Ind. He comes of English ancestry on his father's side and English and Irish on his mother's
side. The father was James Hinchman, born in Monroe county, Va., in 1800, and settled in Rush
county, Ind., in 1822, where he lived until his death, in August, 1882. He was a farmer, who was
successful in life, and with his wife brought up thirteen children–ten boys and three girls. His wife was
Nancy Nickel, born in 1804 and died March 18, 1897, aged 92 years and 6 months. She had lived and
kept house on the same farm seventy-four years. At a family reunion, held at the old family homestead,
September 4, 1880, the parents and children were all present, the children all being heads of families;
sixty-seven children and grandchildren were present, and neighbors and friends to the number of 400.
Joseph V. Hinchman lived on the farm until he was 21 years old, and received a common school
education. He had no professional or business training until he went into business for himself. Teaching
school at $20 a month, and boarding himself, was his first employment after leaving the farm. He came
to Glenwood October 13, 1854, and opened the first drug store in the county, a business which he
carried on for twenty-five years, and sold out in 1879. This was his first business venture, and it was
started at a time when $1.50 to $2 a day was a very satisfactory profit for the store. In 1869 he started a
private bank in connection with the store, but sold it out in 1871, and helped organize the Mills County
National bank, of which he was that year elected president, an office which he held for ten years. In
1882 he sold his interest in the National bank and established the Bank of J. V. Hinchman in
Glenwood, of which he is still the proprietor. Here is a case where success has been achieved by steady,
hard work and economy, and without any element of speculation. He started with a capital of $1,500, a
portion of which was used in entering land in Polk and Mills counties, the remainder employed in his
drug store. This has grown until now Mr. Hinchman is rated at $300,000 above all debts. He never
mortgaged a piece of property in his life. While accumulating this fortune he has been generous and
has, within the past six years, given away to various churches and colleges $30,000; $25000 to Des
Moines college–the Baptist institution. Mr. Hinchman's has been a purely business life. He has devoted
himself with remarkable singleness of purpose to achieving success in a financial way, and by honest
dealing, promptness in meeting obligations, economy and industry, and attention to details, small as
well as large, he has achieved great success. Like many other strong, successful men, he has no partners
[p.404] and no low-priced clerks or employes. He was a member of the whig party, and has always been
a republican. As his generous gift indicates, he belongs to the Baptist church, and has for thirty-three
years. Mr. Hinchman was married to Nancy L. Fish in Moundsville, Va., September 27, 1859. They
have had only one child, who died in infancy. Mrs. Hinchman was born November 13, 1833, and is still
living.

Burwell S died age 45. He is buried along with three children in the California Cemetery. There is no listing in this cemetery for his wife. To get
to this cemetery you proceed from Dowagiac on what is know as the Middle Crossing road about one mile, turn west about 1/2 mile to what is
known as the Monamy farm. The cemetery lies back in a field, several rods from the road., not readily seen from the highway and is not in good
condition. A Arlynn G. Gantz, P O Box 535, DeWitt, Mi 48820, went to this Cemetery and took some pictures for me in May of 1988. He wrote
and told me that the neighbor who lived closest to the California cemetery, did not know there was a cemetery back in the woods behind his farm.
He took pictures of Wiley S and Virginia Hinchman Woods, and Amanda Woods stones for me. He did not say if there were other stones in the
woods or not. John K and Peninnah Hinchman and five of their children are also buried there, as well as Clement Hinchman's wife Sarah Ann.
Hi Sharon,
I just received a letter today from my cousin Lyman Bybee. He says in his letter that he was cleaning out the garage in his parents old house and
found an 1850 Bible in a utility cabinet. His daughter lives in the house now but luckily he found it before she cleaned out the garage. He says
the Bible was in such bad condition that he knows she would have probably tossed it without looking through it because it was in such bad
condition. Now to the GOOD stuff! This is what he found.
Burwell Hinchman was born June 24, 1821
Henry Clay Hinchman was born May 23, 1853
William Washington Hinchman was born Sept. 2, 1855
Ella Hinchman was born March 26, 1858
Robert Everrett Hinchman was born May 16, 1860
(looks to me like the middle name is Evenett)
Burwell Hinchman & Emilia Hunter was married July 25, 1850
He sent me a copy of the page, which I will copy and send to you. It looks to me like this is quite a find considering I just did a search for this
family and nobody has very much on them.

Notes for Sarah Ann Safford:
Sharon - Thought I sent a message (info follows) in reply to your query on Gen-Forum. I don't think I've sent this to you before.
Sarah Stafford Hinchman was the d. of Joseph Stafford and Eunice Groat. Sarah, b. in Ontario (birth date calc. via Calif. Cem. recording - had
figured her birth to be 13 Aug 1828), in Ontario, Canada. I just checked the info on the MI State Library letter of 1 May 1975, which says Sarah
Ann, wf. Clement d. April 15 1851, ae 22y 8m 2d.
In my Gt. Gdfather's 1906 Diary ( in the back ) is written: Augusta Miller 43 Hamlin, Detroit, MI; at the time I 'assumed' that was his niece,
Augusta Hinchman-m. a Miller. Have not known her husband's first name till I read your query on Gen-Forum.
It was also through my Gt. Gdfather's (Charles Stafford, son of Joseph) Diary that I found out he had a sister, Mary, whose grave he mentioned
visiting in Erie PA, and a sister, Sarah, whose grave he'd visited in the Old California Burying Ground (CA Cem). He had a brother older and one
young than him. I don't know of any other siblings.
My Father knew approx. where the Cem was; we stopped at the Momeny's and they told us how to walk there, as it's back off the road (this was c
1975). The cem. , very old, had been a place to party, for young people, many of the stones were down, grass high, 6" trees growing all over it,
and extremely mosquito-ee. Needless to say we did not look around or stay long!
Is George Miller, or the Hinchman's your relation?
Hope info is informative, Sharon. -E

Portrait and Biographical Record of Berrien and Cass Counties, 1893
pp. 620-621
William W. EASTON, M.D., a practicing physician and surgeon of Sowagiac, was born four miles from this city, in Silver Creek Township,
October 3, 1853. His father was one of the early settlers of this section of Michigan. While his paternal grandfather, Thomas Easton, was a native
of Kentucky. His great-grandfather, also named Thomas Easton, served with valor during the entire period of the Revolutionary War, and shortly
after the close of the conflict came to Kentucky, having formerly been a resident of Virginia. Grandfather Easton was a child of about ten years
when he accompanied his parents to Michigan, and with them settled in Berrien Township, Berrien County, remaining there until his death, in
1867.
The father of our subject, Thomas Easton, was born near Bowling Green, Ky., on the 26th of November, 1826, and grew to manhood in Berrien
County. In 1850 he chose as the site of his future home an unimproved tract of land in Silver Creek Township, in the midst of the woods and far
removed from other pioneer settlers. In that township he married Miss Emily, daughter of John K. Hinchman, a native of West Virginia, who came
from Logan Court House to Michigan about 1850. The young couple commenced housekeeping upon the eighty-acre farm which Mr. Easton had
purchased, and by their industry and energy they added to their property from time to time until their landed possessions aggregated two hundred
acres through his own unaided efforts. In 1888 he removed thence to Dowagiac, where he and his wife have since made their home.
The parents of our subject have had a family of four children: Dr. W.W., of this sketch; Mrs. Jennie M. Allen, who resides in Dowagiac; J.M., who
is in Chicago; and E. W., a resident of Dowagiac. Politically, the father was a Democrat until the second term of President Lincoln, when his
opinions underwent a radical change, and he has since that time affiliated with the Republicans. Our subject was reared in the parental home and
enjoyed exceptional educational advantages. After having attended a course of study in the schools of Niles, he entered the University of Notre
Dame, at South Bend, Ind., and procecuted his studies there with diligence and success.
His literary studies concluded, our subject entered the office of Clendenin & Whitehall, at Niles, and commenced the study of medicine under their
preceptorship. Later he entered the Bennett Medical College at Chicago, and was graduated from that institution ont he 24th of June, 1877. He
remained in Chicago for two and one-half years after graduating, and then returned to Dowagiac, where he has since conducted a general practice.
In November, 1879, he married Miss Alma A. Johnson, who was born in Gottenburg, Sweden, and she accompanied an uncle and aunt to
America, settling with them in Chicago. The union of Dr. and Mrs. Easton has been blessed by the birth of two children, William T. and Mabel.
And every public-spirited citizen should do, the Doctor takes an active interest in politics, and is an outspoken Republican, advocating the views of
that party with all the enthusiasm of his nature. In 1888 he was chosen delegate to the State convention, and he has served in other positions of
honor and trust. Socially, he is identified with the Royal Arch Masons, the Knights of the Maccabees, the Knights of Pythias and the Legion of
Honor, and is examining physician for the Order of the Maccabees and Legion of Honor, also for the Masonic Mutual of Grand Rapids. He is a
successful general practitioner of the eclectic system of medicine, and has an extensive practice both in Dowagiac and throughout the surrounding
country. His home is one of the most beautiful in the city, being the residence formerly occupied by the late P.D. Beckwith.

Cass County Michigan Biographies
From The History of Cass County by Glover
ISAAC S. POUND
POUND,SMITH,HINCHMAN,WHITE,POE,TIMM,BARKS,BUTLER
Isaac S. Pound is one of the leading old settlers of Cass county and a veteran of the Civil war. Coming to southern Michigan at an early day he has
assisted in making the county what it is, the labors of the early settlers winning for it a place among the leading counties of this great
commonwealth. His mind bears the impress of the early historic annals of southern Michigan and he can relate many interesting incidents of the
early days when the land was largely unimproved and the work of development had been scarcely begun. He was born in Ontario county, New
York, September 22, 1837, and is of English lineage. His paternal great-grandparents came from England, settling in New Jersey. The greatgrandfather,
Thomas Pound, served as a soldier of the Revolutionary war, becoming aide-de-camp on the staff of General Washington and acting
for a part of the time as staff quartermaster. He had three sons, Thomas, Isaac and John. The second was the grandfather of our subject and he, too,
manifested his loyalty to his country by serving in the war of 1812 as a private. The family record is notable because of the industry, integrity and
high principles of its representatives. There has never been a drunkard, a pauper nor a criminal among the Pounds and such a record is one of
which any man might well be proud.
Thomas Pound, father of our subject, was a native of Orange county, New York, in which locality he was reared and educated. He married in that
county to Miss Sallie Smith, also a native of that county and a daughter of Isaac Smith, who likewise served as a private in the war of 1812. He
was supposed to have been of Irish lineage. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Pound removed to Chemung county, New York, and
afterward became residents of Ontario county, that state, where they resided until 1844. Hoping to enjoy better opportunities in the west they then
started for Michigan and as this was before the era of railroad transportation, they traveled by wagon, making their way direct to Newberg
township, Cass county, where Mr. Pound had secured one hundred and sixty acres of land. The tract was entirely wild and uncultivated, not an
improvement having been made on the place. He first built a log house about sixteen by twenty-four feet and then began to clear the land,
performing the arduous task of cutting away the timber, taking out the stumps and preparing the fields for the plow,. In due course of time,
however, his land was placed under cultivation and brought forth rich harvests. He was a hard working man, energetic and enterprising, and was
regarded as one of the leading and representative early citizens of his community. His political allegiance was given to the Whig party until the
organization of the Republican party, when he joined its ranks and continued one of its supporters until his death. He served as highway
25
commissioner and acted as a member of the grand jury that held a session in 1856. His religious faith was indicated by his membership and loyalty
to the Protestant Methodist church. He died upon the old homestead November 26, 1923,and was for some years survived by his wife, who
reached the advance age of eighty-three years. In their family were eight children, seven sons and a daughter, of which number five reached adult
age, while four are still living.
Isaac S. Pound, the second child and the first born son of this marriage, was a lad of seven summers when brought by his parents to Cass county.
His education was acquired in one of the old-time log schoolhouses of the township, with its slab seats and other primitive furnishings. The
building was heated by a large fireplace, occupying almost one entire end of the room. His educational privileges, however, were very limited, for
his services were needed upon the farm and he assisted in the development of the fields until about twenty-one years of age. He afterward took
charge of the old homestead property, which he had farmed for three years, when he purchased the place upon which he now resides. For a year
thereafter he kept “bachelor’s hall,” but in March 1862, won a companion and helpmate for life’s journey, being married at that time to Miss
Elizabeth Hinchman, a daughter of J. K. and Panena (White) Hinchman. Mrs. Pound was born in Boone county, West Virginia, and was seven
years of ages when she came to Cass county with her parents, who settled in Silver Creek township. She was the youngest in a family of seven
children. At the time of this marriage Mr. Pound brought his bride to the farm upon which he now resides, having lived here for forty-five
consecutive years with the exception of a brief period of four years spent in VanBuren county and his term of service in the war of the Rebellion. In
August, 1864, he responded to the country’s urgent need for troops, enlisting as a member of the Fourteenth Michigan Battery of Light Artillery,
and served until July, 1865, when, the war having closed, he was mustered out as a private and returned to his home. The marriage of Mr. and
Mrs. Pound has been blessed with six children, who are yet living: Ella, now the wife of Fred W. Timm, a resident of Cassopolis; Fred J., a mail
carrier living in Marcellus, Michigan; Eve E., the wife of Andrew J. Poe, whose home is in Newberg township; Carrie, the wife of Thomas G.
Barks of Vandalia; Arthur W., who is living upon the old home farm; and Jane, the wife of W. Butler of Newberg township.
Throughout his entire life Mr. Pound has followed the occupation of farming, and is now the owner of one hundred and twenty acres of arable
land, which he has brought under a high state of cultivation, and it is known as “The Maple Grove Farm.” there are good buildings upon the place
and he has divided the land into fields of convenient size by well kept fences. He has secured many of the late improved farm implements and in all
of his work is progressive and enterprising. He votes with the Republican party and is unfaltering in his advocacy of its principles. He has attended
the county conventions for forty years or more, usually as a delegate, and his opinions have carried weight in the party councils. He held some
minor offices, and at all times is loyal and progressive in his citizenship. He belongs to W. J. May post, No. 65, G.A.R., in which he has filled all
the chairs save that of chaplain, and he has been a member of the Grange for more than thirty years. His residence in the county covers a period of
sixty-one years, and he has been closely and helpfully identified with its development and progress. When the family located in Michigan there
were only about twenty-five voters in Newberg township, and now there are about five hundred. There were a number of wild animals and
considerable wild game, including bears, wolves, deer and turkeys and prairie chickens, so that it was not a difficult talk for the pioneer settle to
secure game for his table. This was largely a timer region, the forests having as yet been uncut, but today there are seen waving fields of grain
where once stood the native trees. The little pioneer cabins have long since given place to commodious and substantial farm residences, while here
and there towns and villages have sprung up, containing excellent industrial and commercial interests. Mr. Pound rejoices in what has been
accomplished, and at all times he is regarded as a citizen whose aid can be counted upon to further every movement or measure for the public
good.

JOHN T.HINCHMAN was born in Union Township, Rush Co. Indiana. April 21, 1825. He was the son of John and Nancy (Nickell) Hinchman,
whose personal history appears in this volume. Our subject spent his boyhood and youth on the farm, and received a common school education. He
adopted farming as his life occupation. At the age of twenty-one, or on February 26, 1846, he was married to Sarah A. Blacklidge, daughter of
John and Nancy (Semons) Blacklidge, who settled in Union Township in 1823, and lived here until their deaths. Mrs. Hinchman was born
September 23, 1826, and has spent her entire life here. They had two children: Roda A., deceased, and William M., now married and residing near
his father. Our subject began housekeeping on the farm on which his brother Robert lives, but in December 1847, removed to the farm where he
now resides. This he purchased in the spring of that year. It was partly improved with ordinary improvements. It now consists of 160 acres under a
high state of cultivation. His residence is a fine one. He began life a poor man, and by dint of industry has been eminently successful, and can be
classed among the leading farmers of the township. He and wife aremembers of the Christian Church. Politically, he is a staunch Republican,
andfirmly upholds the principles of that party. He is one of the honest andupright citizens of Rush County
Children of John Hinchman and Sarah Blacklidge are:
219 i. Roda A6 Hinchman.
220 ii. William M Hinchman.
139. Robert N5 Hinchman (James4, John3, William2, William1) was born February 09, 1843 in Rush County, Indiana. He married Sarah
J Kirkpatrick August 10, 1864 in Rush County, Indiana, daughter of David Kirkpatrick and Jane Oldham.
Notes for Robert N Hinchman:
ROBERT N. HINCHMAN (Picture) is one of the leading farmers of Union Township. He is a native of Rush County, and the son of James and
Nancy Hinchman, early pioneers, whose biographies appear in this volume. He was born February 9, 1843, and spent his boyhood and youth on
the farm, receiving a fair education in the district schools. On August 10, 1864, he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah J. Kirkpatrick, a native
of Union Township, and the daughter of David and Jane (Oldham) Kirkpatrick, the former a native of Kentucky, and the latter of Tennessee. The
Kirkpatricks were among the first settlers of Rush County. The family circle of Mr. and Mrs. Hinchman has been blessed with six children, four of
whom are living at this writing. They are: Carrie B., Van A., Eva M., and William E. They began life together on the farm where they now reside,
which will compare favorably with the best-improved farms in the county. Farming has been his principal occupation in life, although in the fall of
1873, he removed to Rushville, where he resided until 1876, when he returned to the farm. Politically, he has been identified with the Republican
Party and has worked hard for its success in the county. In 1876, he was elected County Commissioner, and for eleven consecutive years he has
held that responsible position. During his official term the county debt has been wiped out, and numerous bridges and other public improvements
have been made. The county is now out of debt, and can be classed among the foremost in the State as to public improvements. Mr. Hinchman
retires from the Board of Commissioners with the good will and praise that a faithful public servant should receive from all parties. In connection
with his farm labors, he is also engaged in buying grain at Ging's Station, a village on the J., M. & I. K. R., located one-half mile northeast of his
farm. Honest and upright in all his dealings, Mr. Hinchman can be classed among the substantial citizens of Rush County. His portrait appears in
this volume.

221 i. Carrie B6 Hinchman.
222 ii. Van A Hinchman.
223 iii. Eva M Hinchman.

State of Michigan, County of VanBuren, John B Woods age 24, and Helen M Vanderhoof, age 20 were married on Dec. 26,1878 by John W.H.
Carlisle, Clergyman. Wittnesses, Rosita Hoppin and Lovinia Hoppin.
John B Woods and Wife Helen Vanderhoof, along with their son Sherban, went with Helen's Parents William and Ann Vanderhoof to the Dakota
Territory. These families were one of many from Cass Co MI. to be attracted by the Westward movement. Mr. Vanderhoof had contacted his
brother, who had gone on ahead, to buy a claim for him in Dakota Territory, near the settlement of Madison, now in SD. In the latter part of
August in 1880, the Vanderhoof and Woods families left in covered wagons to travel over 700 miles to their home. It took them 6 weeks to make
the trip, but without any serious difficulties.
They drove a Studebaker wagon on the box of which was fastened a row of hoops. Over these was stretched a heavy canvas, which protected them
from from rain and the heat of the sun. The wagon was filled with articles needed for the trip and there was still room for the women and children
to sleep in it. John Woods drove another wagon where the men slept.
They left their Decatur home located a mile west of the village on what is now M-40. Their first stop was at the Code school, where they said
good-bye to the teacher, Miss Mary Caldwell and their school mates. They next stopped at the Christie and Bradley farms, at Mile Ryans and the
O'Rourkes.
They drove on to the Johns home in Silvercreek, where they spent the night. The next day they drove to Niles and spent the night with a relative,
George Hoppin. This was the last they spent at a house until they reached Gilman, Iowa, where they spent the night with another relative.
They drove through rain and mud the first ten days, and camping by the roadside was far from pleasant. A two burner stove and oven enabled the
woman to provide meals. It was very hard work. After supper was over and the horses feed and groomed, the families sat around the campfire and
enjoyed an hour or two of rest and comfort until bedtime. Mr Vanderhoof would read a chapter from the bible and say a prayer, before retired
under the canvas for the night. Jack the big black and white dog would curl up under the wagon where the women and children slept.
The two wagons were placed close together, and only once did they feel any danger from prowlers. Jack's angry growls kept them away. The
horses were tied to the backs of the wagons.
The farmers along the sold them grain and hay and milk and vegetables. One of the great events for the children was crossing the Mississippi
River.
Mr Vanderhoof's membership in the Odd Fellows Lodge was a great help to them. The Pin he wore on his coat lapel brought them many friendly
greetings and questions about their trip.
At Gilman Iowa they enjoyed for the third time another night of sleeping in a bed at relatives. They started out the next day, and in another week
to ten days reached LaVeme, Minn. Mr. and Mrs. Vanderhoof's son, David worked in a store there, and helped make their stay peasant.
The travelers were nearing their destination. After leaving LaVeme came Dell Rapids, Dakota Territory, then Madison, and then Herman, on a
pretty lake of the same name. When driving into Herman, they saw ties being laid for the railroad, and thought their goods that they had shipped
from Decatur would be arriving soon, but they had to wait many months for them.
31
A group of Odd Fellows and other gathered and directed them to their claim.
Their winter in Dakota Territory was the hardest they had ever experienced, excepting the terrible blizzard of 1886. I think they were there for
about eight years before returning to Decatur, VanBuren, MI. While in Dakota Territory, the had three more sons, Clarence B., James and John
Wiley.
After returning to VanBuren Co., they had four more children, Carrie, Harry, Harold and Violet.

John B Woods and Susie Morris Woods divorced, but I don't have a date.
My Dad, George Woods only remembers seeing Grampa John B Woods once, when dad was about 4 or 5 years old. Grampa let his sit on his lap
and play with a pocket watch he had. My dad just loved the watch, and Grampa told him when he grew up he could have the watch. But when
Grampa died the watch just seemed to have disappeared.
Aunt Ica and Aunt Madeline told me about Great Grampa John B Woods getting trampled by a horse. He was not suppose to go into the stall with
this horse, and he had been warned, this this horse was dangerous. Well Grampa who always liked to give horses carrots, walked into the stall
anyway with a carrot for the horse. He fed the carrot to the horse, and then the horse reared Straight into the air and came down on grampa. The
horse kept rearing and stomping grampa. Grampa was all broken up and blinded because and they took him to Ann Arbor Hospital. He was there
about three weeks. Uncle Clarence went and got him and took him to his home in Kalamazoo. Grampa was there about three weeks before he
died.

Individual:
HAROLD G WOODS OF DECATUR
SHOT AND INSTANTLY KILLED
Harold Woods age 14 years and a son of John
B Woods of this village, was shot and killed by
his playmate, Beryl Adams, also age 14 years, at
the Woods farm in Hamilton twp. last Thursday
shortly after noon.
The boys had accompanied John B Woods to
the farm and had assisted him in doing some
farm work during the forenoon. They ate their
dinner in the old house upon the farm. After
dinner John B Woods went out of the house,
byt before going out told the boys not to touch
a shotgun that was standing in the corner, as
it was loaded. The boys then began talking
about the gun and each asserted that he was
not afraid of it. The Adams boy reached around
from a milkcan he was sitting
to show Harold he was not afraid of it, hit it.
Harold punched it with a old buggy spoke when
he moved his hands. The gun exploded, the
charge striking Harold in the left cheek, passing
upward and lodged in his brain at the top of
the head.
John B Woods hearing the explosion, looked
in the door just in time to see his son fall.
The Adams boy cannot tell whether the gun
slipped from his hands and he caused the
explosion or whether Harold caused by
striking it with the buggy spoke.
No blame is attached to the Adams boy, except
that of his disobedience to the order
of John B Woods not to touch the gun and
of extreme carelessness, and the same
blame would attach to the to the dead boy.
Harold Woods lived with his father in Decatur
Village. Buryl Adams is a son of Charles Adams
of Dowagiac, but has been in the charge of his
guardian S,P. Ball of Wayne twp. for sometime
past, his mother having died some three years
ago. Mr Ball had secured him a home in the
family of E.F. Baxter of Hamilton twp., where
34
he resided at the time of the accident.
The day before the accident young Adams
came to visit Harold with Mr. and Mrs. Baxter.
When they were ready to go home they could
not find him and returned without him. He
stayed all night with the Woods boy and the next
day went to the farm with Harold and his father.
No coronor's inquest was held; It was not deemed
necessary.
The funeral services of the dead boy were held
at the Methodist Church in Decatur Sunday at 2:30
o"clock. His burial was in Hamilton Cemetery.
Harold G Woods was born Jan.31,1895, in Hamilton twp.
He died June 17,1909. Aged 14 years, 4 months and
7 days. When he was two years old his darling mother
died. He then went to live with his Aunt, Mrs. Pound until
he was six years old. In 1899 his father was again
married, making a home for his children, and Harold
came home to live, where he has been for the
greater part of the intervening time.
Harold was a happy bright faced boy, with a
smile for everybody.
His neighbors all loved him for his sweet
disposition.
On Wed. night a companion stayed with Harold
at his home and in company with the father and
brother they went to the farm on Thursday. At
noon playing in the yard with his friend, Harold
was accidentally shot through the head and fell
at his companions feet dead.
He leaves to mourn his father, one sister and
two brothers, and a host of friends in the neighberhood
of his Aunt where he spent six years of
his life. His funeral was held in the Methodist
Church on Sunday at 2:30. Rev. J.W. Davids
officiating. We laid his body away in Hamilton
Cemetery.
CARDS OF THANKS
We desire to express our sincere thanks

Hinchman, a native of West Virginia, who came
38
from Logan Court House to Michigan about 1850.
Beckwith.

Notes for John Wiley Woods:
John Wiley Woods was born April 16,1887 on the homestead of John and Helen Woods, on the prairie near Madison, Dakota Territory. At that
time there was no laws saying you had to record a birth, and his birth was never recorded. I have never been able to obtain a birth record.
While living in Dakota territory, John and Helen Woods lived in a house built on the side of a hill, with a sod roof. One day Grampa John's
horses ran away, and ran on top of the sod roof and fell through, John Wiley Woods was in a little swing, that his father had made for him, and it
hung from the ceiling, at the time the horses came through, and they just missed coming through on him. A very close call.
Gramma Helen Woods used to bake her bread, everyday, and the Indians who lived near by would smell her bread and come and stand at the edge
of their yard, and she would always give them loaves of her bread. The Indians loved this. Aunt Ica and Aunt Madaline said this was related to
them by Uncle Clarence Woods.

Notes for Katherine I "Kate" Birchfield:
MY MEMORIES GROWING UP AND SOME MEMORIES TOLD TO ME
BY FAMILY MEMBERS.
47
By Katherine "Kate" I. Birchfield Woods.
My Mom and Dad wed August 08,1920 in Harden County Ohio. I am not sure where
we lived,
but it was on the Scioto Marsh in Harden County Ohio when I was born, July 21,1921.
My Uncle Payne
Fraley told me that the first time he saw me was when I was three weeks old. My
Mom and Dad came
down the road walking, and pushing me in a baby buggy, and crossed a bridge over a
ditch into my Grampa
Fraley's yard.
I was not old enough to remember when my sister Helen was born on August 26 1922,
but was told by Mom
that Helen was a preemie baby so small, she could lay in a shoe box. She had a lot of
dark hair. We had a
large round oak stove in the center of the room, and the pipe passed up through the
ceiling into a bedroom
up stairs, so it would be warm too. I remember two dinning room chairs behind the
stove with a feather tick,
and Helen slept there. I think it served the purpose of keeping a premature baby warm.
My brother Jim was born November 11 1923. My memory of him is on a tricycle and
he killed a garden
snake because Helen and I was afraid.
Brother Bill was born December 14 1925.
I remember Grampa and Gramma Fraley's house on the Marsh was a big two story
house, with a walkway
built out of wood that went to the pump. I remember one time when I was there
Gramma wanted me to have
a peanut butter sandwich for lunch, but I wanted only peanut butter without bread,
Grampa Fraley told
Gramma to let me just have the peanut butter, I ate so much that I went out on the
wooden walkway and
threw up a lot.
Grampa and Gramma also had a nice Parlor and Gramma would not let anyone use it.
She only used it
for special occasions. One time Aunt Cassie was there with her boyfriend at the time,
Morgan Wireman,
and they were sitting in Gramma's parlor and Gramma got mad and poured a bottle of
Whiskey on the
floor and lit it with a match.
I remember Gramma Fraley and Aunt Cassie used to bake about six pies a day, usually
Lemon,
Banana and Chocolate pies.
I remember one time Mom baked Dad a birthday cake, and told me it was a secret, but
when my
Dad came home, I took him by the hand and led him into the pantry and showed him
the cake.
Gramma Elizabeth Birchfield lived with us when we moved to a farm at Walkerton, In.
She baby sit
with us kids while Mom and Dad worked. She loved brother Bill and would put a
quilt in a crate, so
she could keep Bill close by when she cooked.
I don't remember if we still lived here, or if we have moved to another house in the
country, near by,
48
when Bob was born February 9 1928. I remember a large concrete Porch with a stone
wall around it.
I had mumps on my 7th birthday. I remember Jim and Helen jumping off the Porch,
they did not catch
the mumps. This is the only I ever saw my Grampa Jim Birchfield. He was a short
man, with white hair
and a beard. We had a player piano. Grampa gave Jim a quarter, and Jim was playing
the piano and
put the quarter in his mouth and swallowed it.
We moved to Lagrange,In. that year. Helen and I started school here and had to walk to
school.
In 1929 we moved to Partello, MI. We lived in Mrs Kerns house almost in the school
yard.
I can't remember the year, but we moved back to McGuffey, Ohio. Helen and I attended
school here
and rode a bus. We lived down the road from our teacher. Helen and I would walk
down the road to
her house. That is the first time I heard Kate Smith sing on the radio.
Next we moved to Williams County Ohio, on the Ira Thomas farm. We went to the
Whaley school
on Disbro Road. Helen, Jim and I went to school here. Brother Bill also started school
here. He
was so small and cute the older girls would carry him to school.
The depression hit while we lived here and a neighbor let us live in a little house house
that leaked
when it rained. Mom would take big heavy wool coats and cut them into quilt strips,
and make
heavy quilts for our beds. I wish I could find one of them, but I would guess they were
threw away
at sometime. Dad worked for .50 cents a day. The farmer could not afford to pay him.
so we got meat,
eggs, milk and butter from him. We went to Cooney school from here, when we could,
which was not
very often.
When Roosevelt became president, Dad went to work for the W.P.A.
Next we moved to the Weir Dick farm north of Columbus, Ohio. We had to walk to
school at Columbus.
Also I remember and us older kids walking across a field and woods to weed onions and
pick pickles.
Aunt Cassie lived with us then.
I can't remember how old I was, but I remember one time Grampa Fraley, Uncle Dan
and Uncle Red
went to Ohio to get Mom out of jail. She had been picked up with Johnny Hamilton
"Big "Red", "her cousin"
and John Dillinger and put in jail. Johnny Hamilton was a second cousin to Mom. His
mother was a Salyers.
This started a lot of stories in our family. A lot which is not true.
I remember when U.S. highway 20 was detoured by our house. We were having a sheep
roast at our place,
and Mom's family was there this Sunday. A large touring car had a flat tire in front of
our house. It was
full of ladies who were dressed in in pants. At this time this was not considered proper
to dress that way,
and none of the women would let the men help change the tire.
49
Lucy and Lindy was born here. Lucy was born May 25 1932 and Lindy was born
December 19 1933. Us
kids had a goat and it would get loose and eat Mom's clothes she had hung on the line to
day. Mom would
get Dad's gun and shoot at it. She never really aimed real good, and never hit the goat.
We moved to Sandhill at Nettle Lake when Lindy was a small baby. We had Scarlet
Fever, me, Bill, Bob,
Lucy and Dad all had it. I contacted Rheumatic Fever, and Dr Jennings took care of us.
We had a river close to Nettle Lake on the back of the farm. The whole family would go
camp and fish here.
We moved to the Easterday farm south of Cooney. We attended Cooney school.
Next we moved to E.B. McNaughton's house, west of York, IN. We went to Metz school
and road a bus.
Once we had a blizzard and got snow bound at school. We stayed one night in Metz with
a family. All
the men got out and helped shovel out roads so we could we could get home. Shirley was
born here
Nov. 29 1935.
My mother always raised a big garden, we had chickens, and eggs. We always had a milk
cow. Mom
made homemade butter and buttermilk, also cottage cheese. She made homemade bread
and buttermilk
biscuits and cornbread. She canned everything from the garden including fruit which we
bought. I
remember picking strawberries, wild blackberries and raspberries. She also picked
elderberries and
made the best jam and pies with these. Wild berries were plentiful in those days. We
always raised hogs
for butchering. We never had too much beef to eat. Mom dried fruit and corn. She made
big boilers of hominy.
The food I remember most is her chickens and dumplings, gingerbread, Biscuits and
cornbread and fried corn.
I remember Gramma Birchfield came to visit. She came by Gray Hound bus. When she
was home on her
small farm in Grant, Michigan, she raised onions. She dressed in long fashion skirts and
blouses, and sun
bonnets, and hi topped shoes, and smoked a clay pipe. When she rode the bus she wore
modern clothes,
shoes and hats, and smoked cigarettes.
Next we moved to the Young place in 1936. It was across from Herschel Huss's folks.
We went to
school at Scott Center.
In 1937 is when my Dad left us. I quit school at 16 to go to work and help Mom. We
stilled lived on Leslie
Young's near Fremont. This is also when Uncle Rice wed Medie Bradley. They lived on
Gaylord Mullett's
farm. That same summer of 1937 Helen, Jim, Bill and I went to Grant Michigan and
stayed in a tent with
our Dad. Our cousin Everett Patrick lived near us. Dad gave us a Model T Car and all
four of us learned
to drive it, in the fire lanes in the woods. When we came back home, part of us lived
with Uncle Rice and
part with Grampa Fraley. Mom had our sister Janice Ann October, 30 1937 and she died
the same day.
I remember holding her and dressing her to be buried.
50
We moved to the Franing house at Partello, Michigan, and this is where I met George
Woods. My mother
became ill and had a ruptured appendix. Was in the Hospital in Marshall, Michigan. My
Mom and brothers
and sisters moved back to IN. George and I got married August 5 1939 in Angola,
Indiana.
George and I took up house keeping and working for his cousin Floyd Baldwin, near
Marshall on a farm.
I learned to milk cows here. I got pregnant for Sharon here. When I got pregnant, I got
homesick to see
Mom, and we did not own a car at the time. George just kidding said, we could always
hitch hike. I surprised
him and said lets go, so we started hitch hiking. A man stopped and picked us up. He said
he was only going
as far as Coldwater, as he had some business there. When we got to Coldwater he let us
out. He told us he
would check when he got done with his business and if we were still where he let us out,
he would take us the
rest of the way to my Mothers. Well sure enough he came back and drove us to Moms
house.
We moved down close to my mother after this We moved into the house with her when
she went and stayed with
sister Helen, when she had her first baby, Shirley. Shirley is about nine months older than
my daughter Sharon.
We then moved to Mason, Michigan, and George worked in Lansing for a theater Co. This
is where my daughter
Sharon Kay was born, Oct.24 1941, about six weeks before the second world war. When
Sharon was born it
cost $64.00, and I also had my tonsils out. We lived in Gramma Coulson's upstairs
Apartment. Gramma Coulson
always said babies needed to be rocked in a rocking chair. One day I heard a noise on the
stairs, and looked
and Gramma Coulson was dragging a rocking chair upstairs for me to rock Sharon in.
Sharon sucked her thumb
when she was a baby. Gramma Coulson asked me what I craved when I was pregnant for
her. I told her I could
never get enough Strawberries. She had some strawberries that she had canned, so she
opened a jar and
fed Sharon the strawberry juice until she was full. Sharon never sucked her thumb again.
George loved farming, so we moved back to Floyd Baldwin's by Marshall, in a new house
Floyd built for us.
One time I had Sharon dressed up real cute, as we were going to town. Well she got away
from me and went
to the barn where her dad was. She walked out in the barnyard and fell headfirst into the
manure. We stayed in
this area until late 1944.
We moved back to In with my Mom so her and George could go to work in Hillsdale in a
war plant.
I was pregnant with Rolland "Ron", my second baby. Helen came here in March, and was
pregnant for
Valanda. One night after George and Mom came in from work, and had just got to sleep,
Helen woke them
up to take her to the hospital. They took her to Angola Hospital, where Valanda was born.
In April of the
same year we went and stayed at Uncle Paynes farm, and Payne and Sylvia went to
Kentucky to get married.
Ron was born June 13 1945. The war ended that year, so the War Plant closed down, and
George went
back farming for a muck farmer. We bought a little house north of York, where my
51
Mother had lived
when Shirley was born.
We next moved to a little green house on a road that ran south off 120, east of Fremont.
One time when
Ron was still a baby, I had changed his Diaper. I always stuck the Safety Pins in my shirt
while I was changing
him. Right shortly after I changed him, he started choking. I checked his diaper and one of
the Pins was not in
his diaper. I panicked and George and I started to the hospital. On there we hit a bump,
and Ron threw up
Tobacco. He had found a cigarette butt and put it in his mouth and swallowed it. I then
looked on my dress and
there was the pin. John was born when we lived here 19 1946. While living here George
bought a car that had
been a State Police car. It was about a 1940 Ford Coop, that you had to crank to start. I did
not have a drivers
license, but I drove anyway. One day I was driving and had Sharon and Ron with me.
Sharon was holding Ron.
While I was stopped at 120 a road truck came around the corner too short and hit the car.
Ron hit the dash, but was
only a little bruised. The car was totaled. Sharon used to love to dress Ron and John up in
her doll clothes and
pretend that they were her babies. John had cute white curly hair, and when George took
the boys down to Aunt
Marthy's and had her shave off their hair, Sharon was mad at him and Aunt Marthy. We
also had a white collie
dog named Lady. She loved Sharon. One time Sharon was jumping on our bed, and
George told her to stop.
Sharon did not listen to him and kept jumping. George picked her up and was going to
spank her and Lady
attacked him. We had to give Lady away after that.
We then moved North of Metz, In on a farm, owned by a Sheriff of Angola, Dorsey Folk.
Sharon started school
here at Metz. She rode a bus. One time while living here George thought he had a slow
leak on one of his tires
on our car. One day he came back into the yard after milking cows, and here was Ron,
down by a tire sticking
his little finger in the tire valve and letting the air out of the tire. We also was living here
when my youngest
brother Lindy came and stayed with us. Lindy and some neighborhood boys got into some
trouble and George
spanked Lindy. This broke Sharon's heart. She could not stand to see her Uncle Lindy cry,
and she went into
his bedroom and babied him.
We moved back to Michigan on M 60 just east of Burlington. While we were living here
we became friends
with Floyd and Lorriane Scofield. We also became friends with Bill and Violet French.
Sharon went to church
with Violets children. Well Bill and George liked to make Moonshine, and got caught one
time, on a Sat night.
They spent the night in Jail. Sharon did not get to go to church that Morning, so she went
that night with Violets
Children. Sharon's Sunday school teacher told Sharon that they had missed her that
morning, and Sharon
proceeded to tell her that she had to stay home because her Dad had been jail. Violets kids
wanted to strangle
her. This is where we lived when Ron and John learned to play Cowboys and Indians. They
had little toy guns
and holsters. We had a round oak stove in the living room. One day they were playing and
Ron was the Indian
that day and was running around the stove, well John the cowboy jumped off the arm of the
52
couch and hit Ron
over the head with his gun and knocked Ron out.
We then moved to Potawattme reservation and farmed potatoes. This is where I decided I
would like to have
bangs. I had always wore my hair long and George loved it. When I cut bangs he was very
mad at me. John
was always my little toe head, and I used to tell him he was made out of sugar. One day
when he was outside
it started raining, and he put his hands over his head and started crying saying my head is
made out of sugar
and is going to melt. The kids and I used to walk in the wooded area. One day I seen a big
blue racer and
grabbed a stick and shook it at the snake, and he crawled away. I was a hero then.
From there we moved to Partello in the Thomas House which we bought. We lived next
door to the Kerns
House where Mom had lived at one time. Steve was born here on April 30 1951. It cost
one weeks pay for Steve,
when he was born. Dr Humphery delivered Steve. Mom said she doctored with Dr
Humphrey until one time she
took Steve in and the doctor could not remember Mom's name. Ron and John started
school at the little country
school in Partello. George and I also started working at Woodlin Metal in Marshall. My
Brother Bob and his first
wife lived in the upstairs apt. So they watched the kids while we were working. One time
while we were working,
a storm came up, and Bob's wife went upstairs to shut her windows. While up there
Sharon was holding Steve, and
went to shut off a lamp. Lightning struck the house at that time and the light bulb
exploded, just as Sharon was
reaching for it. Sharon and the boys ran out of the house screaming and crying, and Sharon
almost squeezed
Steve to death. Jim and Helen and Their family also lived in the upstairs apt. when they
first moved up here from
In. One time when George and I was working different shifts, and George watched the
kids, George was going to
put Steve down for a nap, and he laid down with him. Well George took the nap and Steve
got up and went to
the kitchen. We had been to the grocery store, and I had not put everything away yet. Well
Steve mixed Flour,
Coffee, and butter and everything he could open together. What a mess. We had a little
bulldog when we lived
here and Steve would take our plates after we would get through eating and sit them on the
floor for the dog to lick
and he would say he was helping me do dishes. He would also try to eat the dog food with
the dog. One time Steve
got whooping cough, and every little kid in Partello came and seen him and it got passed
all over Partello. When
Steve learned to walk he used Sharon's baton and pretended like it was a horse. Uncle
Lindy and Little Tommy
Fraley used to come to visit and get Ron and John to wrestling, until one of them would
cry. Mom would put the
boys to bed, and then Lindy and Tom would sneak into the bedroom and give the boys beer
to get them to quit
crying. We bought our first TV when we lived here. One time George took Sharon, Ron
and John, along with my
Brother Lindy to see a cowboy movie. While in the movie, everything had quitted down,
and Ron asked very loud,
Dad how come the horse don't s*** in the movies? Everyone just roared laughing. One
Sunday when we were
living here, Gramma and Grampa Coller, Aunt Madeline and Uncle came down. Gramma
Coller had bought yards
and yards of Flannel. They tore it into diapers for Steve. One Sunday everybody hemmed
53
diapers for Steve.
We then bought the old Roop farm. We had cows that we milked, I raised Chickens here.
Sharon, Ron and John
walked about a mile to country school called Carverville School. We raised big gardens
here. George and I
continued to work at Woodlin Metals in Marshall. Sharon was old enough to baby sit by
her self then. Sharon
was in 4-H, and a saddle club while living here. She had a horse named Ginger. Also one
of our hens was a
runt, and Sharon made a pet out of her. She would go with Sharon when she would go
riding on Ginger. Ron
and John decided they wanted to try smoking one day and sit a pig house on fire. They
were in trouble over that.
We bought our first freezer when we lived here.
We also had a big yellow cat come to the house and the kids started feeding the cat, and
named the cat Tom.
Well Tom had a litter of kittens soon after. We also got a cocker spaniel as a pup, that we
named Pixie. Well
Steve was just learning to talk and could not say his words very plain. When he called
Pixie, it came out pissy.
The older kids used to have a ball getting him to call his dog. When we lived here I used
to fix big Thanksgiving
dinners and have my family up.
Woodlin Metals closed, so George next went to work for Maynard Velliqatte. We moved
to one of his houses.
Steve started school here. Sharon got her drivers license while we lived here. The kids
rode a bus and went to
Olivet School.
We next moved to Quincy, Mi and lived next door to Mom and Sharley. George Worked
in a shop in Quincy
and I went to work in a Fishing Tackle Shop in Bronson. I remember my Sherry Jo and
Lynn coming and
knocking on my door and saying Aunt Kate let us in or we will huff and puff and blow your
house in. One time
they came and were crying because they said they stepped in used dog food.
We next moved to California Corners and Georges Shop went on strike. This is when we
found out that my
Mother had cancer. They settled the strike after about 8 months, and we bought a house in
Coldwater, Mi on
State Street. Mom's cancer returned and she had surgery on her colon, and had to wear a
bag. She stayed
with us until Christmas. I had to quit my job to take care of her. Then all my brothers
rented a house and moved
Mom in it. I still went and stayed nights with her as Shirley had to work. Mom died May
14 1961.
George's shop closed and moved down south. He tried to work in a foundry, and a another
small shop which also
closed, so we moved back up in the Marshall,Olivet area. We bought a trailer and lived in
Helen and her
second husband, Ross's yard. We moved in the Olivet area, so the boys could go to Olivet
School. Sis
married shortly after we moved from Coldwater. One time Gramma Coller came down for a
visit. George had a
