This lady was a wonderful person. She had a good life until she married Frank Gelley. Josephine was born December 4th 1920. Josephine grew up on a farm in Oakland Maryland. She had 5 sisters with Maxine as her favorite. Maxine and Josephine were in the Marines together during WW 2. Josephine and Max were best friends till Josephine passed away.Josephine, my mother, was a bowler and loved bowling more than anything else. She loved her grandchildren and was the sweetest lady. I miss her so often and wish anything we had lived closer. Josephine and Frank were parents to Linda, Bruce, Peggy, and Larry Gelley (who only lived for three days).

Sixteen year old Carol Ann Hauser was found in her apartment along with her friend Christie Dangle, 15. Both had been severely beaten, apparently with a hammer, and stabbed. Carol died and Christie was hospitalized in critical condition.
Variously described as both a cousin and a boyfriend (perhaps both?), 18 year old Tracey Eugene Barto, who was on parole, was arrested and arraigned for Carol's murder and for the beating and stabbing of Christie. It was a non-jury trial, presided over by a judge, and took five days to complete.
Tracey said that he was high on drugs and alcohol and that he couldn't remember the attack. His attorney posited that Tracey's clothes had been stolen, worn by the real attacker, and then returned to him. The judge didn't agree and Tracey was found guilty on both counts. Barto was found guilty of 3rd degree murder and attempted murder in November of 1980. Carol, age 16, was his cousin and said to be his girlfriend. He faced up to 40 years in prison for the crimes. Barto stated on the stand that he was "pretty well stoned" the weekend before he murdered Carol and beat Christie and doesn't remember what he did from the time he left the girl's apartment until he woke up in jail the following day. The District Attorney didn't asked for the death penalty.
Carol Hauser died and Christie Dangle was hospitalized for over two months. Christie was pregnant by Tracey Barto's brother and lost the baby due to the assault. See her testimony at his trial at Permanent brain damage is feared . . .
