My Grandfather Hartman
My paternal grandfather served in the Army Air Service from 1918 to approximately 1924. This was along the Southern US border from Texas to Arizona. His unit was building emergency airstrips along the border for the Dehavilland planes that were patrolling for smugglers as he told it.

the 30's. It used no milk so was a little cheaper, which was very important
during the depression - hence the name.
2 eggs, separated
2 cups flour
3/4 cup butter
1 and 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup cold water
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
Cream butter and sugar, add egg yoks and mix well. Add baking soda to flour and add to batter alternately with the water, starting and ending with the flour. Add vanilla. Beat egg whites to stiff peaks and fold into the batter. Pour into 2 cake pans (8 in) and bake in 350 degree oven for 35 minutes. Frost with a white sugar frosting.
Note: My mother used to put thinly sliced bananas between the layers - after frosting the first layer and before putting on the second layer.
