Mr. George Harden, an old resident of Brisbane, died
at Bowen Hills on Saturday night. Mr. Harden arrived
in Moreton Bay on 3rd November, 1862, in the Prince
Consort. He settled at Oxley, where he took up land in
connection with Mr. and Mrs. William Revell, relatives.
The deceased afterwards went to Gatton, thence to
Gympie, and subsequently conducted an auctioneering
business in Brisbane for some years. He was also the first
H. M. Custom-house agent in Brisbane.
Mr. Harden and the late Mr. Edmund MacDonnell and
Mr. John Fenwick were the first Irish masons to establish
the St. Patrick Lodge. Mr. George Harden was the eldest
son of the late Mr. John Harden, of the Steam Packet
Company, County Dublin, and of Brighton Lodge, Dublin.
His mother survives him, at the advanced age of 92.
The deceased leaves a grown up family of four sons and
five daughters, one of the daughters being married to
Captain J. K. Berry. Mrs. Harden predeceased her husband
by nine and a half years.
