The Auckland Star, N.Z. 28th August 1903. Mr. Thomas J. Harbutt, who died at his residence, at Mount Albert, yesterday afternoon, was a native of North Shields, where his earlier business experience as an ironmonger was gained. He came to Auckland about 28 years ago from Jersey, and introduced the broom manufacturing industry to this part of the country, establishing the Kapai Corn Broom Company, of which he was manager till his death. He was 73 years of age, and he had done service as a member of different local bodies, such as the City North Licensing Commitee, Mount Albert Road Board, and Mount Albert School Commitee, besides which he was for many years honorary choir master of the Beresford-street Congregational Church. His death was accelerated by a fall from a trap he sustained some weeks ago. He leaves a widow , fourteen children and five grandchildren. His third son is secretary to the Auckland Liedertafel and six of the elder members of the family are in Australia.

The Auckland Star, New Zealand. 18th June 1928. MRS. ANNABELLE HARBUTT. A highly respected resident of Mount Albert since 1883, Mrs. Annabelle Harbutt died at her home, Woodward Street, on Saturday, aged 85 years. She came to Auckland with her husband and family in 1876. The voyage was started towards the end of the previous year, but heavy weather was encountered in the Bay of Biscay, and the Brodie Castle was picked up derelict and towed back to Falmouth. After arrival at Auckland the family lived for five years at Devonport, and then went to Mount Albert, where Mrs. Harbutt resided until her death. Both Mr. and Mrs. Harbutt were active workers in the Congregational Church at Beresford Street for some years. Mr. Harbutt was at one time choir master, while Mrs. Harbutt worked in various activities connected with that Church, and was good to the sick and the needy. She is survived by the following children: Messrs. Sydney and Bruce Harbutt, of Auckland, Mr. Wilfred Harbutt of Cambridge, and Messrs. Helier and Percy Harbutt, of Sydney; Mrs. S. F. Allen and Mrs. J. R. Sime, of Sydney, Mrs. E. W. Winstone, and Mrs. F. M. Winstone and Miss Doris Harbutt, of Auckland. Miss K. E. Harbutt, Mrs. E. D. Gray and Mr. L. Harbutt, of Sydney, are step-children. There are 25 grandchildren.
