The name Fulmer is derived from the name Volmark or Volmar which refers to the dwarf king in the old Scandinavian or Germanic religion. In an era wherein being literate was the exception, oftern rare, it is unsurprising that Volmar has been spelled Volmer, Vollmer, Folmar, and Fulmer is not surprising. There is a branch of the Family that moved to Alabama that spelled the name Folmar which is probably closer to the origin than Fulmer. My theory is that the Volmars arrived in Germany via the Rhine River during the beginning of the mini ice age from the North Sea and Baltic Sea area. The male Y for the family is I1a which has it's origin in Denmark or Sweden.
History
My Fulmer line first emigrated to the United States in 1752. Eberhard Ludwig Vollmer (later Fulmer) sailed from Rotterdam on board the ship Caledonia, which docked in Charleston Harbor in October of 1852. Eberhard grew up in Unterhausen, Wurttenberg, Germany. Eberhard and his family settled in the Camping Creek area of the Dutch Fork in the back country of South Carolina. This area is now Lexington County, South Carolina.

This is a family photo taken of Pick Fulmer and his second wife Corena Rhodes Fulmer. I am unsure if any of the children are actually from his first marriage to Mary Calen Poe Fulmer of Walker County, Georgia. It appears that the photographer may have taken the picture at their home, and just hung a blanket in the background as a backdrop. On the sides you can see what looks to be a building behind, and the ground on the bottom. The boys may be Bob, Clifford and Fred, but that is the mystery for me.
