Fountano name was not the original spelling. I am not sure what the original spelling but based on my dad's DNA matches as well as his brothers we have several DNA match cousins with Fontenot and Fonteneau in their trees. The original pronunciation of the name was almost the same as Fontenot and Fonteneau pronunciation.. The name may originally be Fonteneau

History

My father Johnny Fountano Sr was the oldest of 4 sons of William Paul Fountano. My father was born July 1940 his father William Paul. Born 1916 in September. My great granfather was name William Henry Fountano born 1877. His father was Joe Fountano. He was the one I identified with a different spelling in the census. Joe was born in Louisiana in 1820 and moved to Wilson co Texas he was listed in the 1870 census as Joe fontenoe and the 1880 as Joe Fountenlow. Also according to a family member who grew up with William Henry was told the original spelling Fonteneau was changed by his great grandfather to Fountano. The great grandfather was Joe mentioned.
