My mama was named after the sister of her Papa(father). They shared the name Mary Alice Quinn. Most of her family called her Mary Alice. Above it said she was the mother of 10 but it should be mother of 9!

There are several ways Eliza last name was spelt! The few records show it to be Say or Saye. Her parents were Robert & M. E. Say as it was listed on the 1870 Census. I don't know if they could read or write so the spelling was probably who ever wrote it for them. Eliza marriage records show her last name as Saye. No record showed her last name to be Saife. Eliza was Jeff Duke first wife . She passed away 4 months after marriage to Jeff. I don't have a death record so we don't know if she was ill or miscarried a baby. I think the dates we have for her Uncle Clyde found when he researched in the early 1980.

I just remember Aunt Vaucy laughing & making me laugh with her! She was married to my Uncle Joe for 32 years until he passed away. He treated her like a Queen as he did all the cleaning,shopping& cooking! He also worked outside of the home so he was "amazing" to me! When my grandmother Duke was very ill my Daddy went to see her& then went home with Uncle Joe. When he got home Daddy told us that when they got to the house Aunt Vaucy said"Joe I've been waiting all day for you to come home & make me a sandwhich!" We laughed at Daddy cause he couldn't understand 'why" she couldn't make one! That was Aunt Vaucy & Uncle Joe loved her ennough to make her a sandwich
Thomas Clarence Duke, went by his middle name Clarence as there were too many "Thomas"s in his extended family.
Too many men named William in our family! Most went by their middle names not by William. Our grandfather went by his middle name Jesse. I never knew him as he passed away in 1933 months before our oldest brother was born. I can tell you that my Daddy loved his father & missed him so much and was proud to be his son. At the time of Jesse death it was called "Sleeping Sickness" but a cousin thinks it was "encephalitis lethargica". Grandpa Duke mother & baby sister died in 1900. Jesse & his brother Luther dug the baby sister grave. Someone came & told them their mother died & they needed to dig another grave.(Always made me cry that they had to dig graves)

Emma T Brown Duke was the mother of 6 children not 7 children. Joseph B Duke was counted twice as it said"They gave birth to Joseph B Duke" and he had already been listed with his siblings. Sweet Baby Girl is what I called the baby born & died sometime that day before her mother passed away. The older boys had to dig a grave for the baby & found out they needed to keep digging as their mother had also passed away.
