Janet Carol Kiser Dubois was my very dear friend for many years. She was an only child. Her father was a minister (I think his name was Walter Kiser), and her mum was a housewife and mother (I cannot recall her name now.). Janet finished high school but never enjoyed the classroom experience, so whilst she was very intelligent, she had no desire to go to university. She worked as an accounting clerk most of her life. She had a poodle (I think the poodle was named FiFi) growing up that she dearly loved and grieved for after it passed. She never got another pet that I am aware. She was a romantic soul. She married David Dubois, but they divorced a few years after they married. Janet never remarried, and she never had any children which I thought very sad because she would have made a wonderful mum. Janet loved animals. She was a great lover of science fiction and a big fan of Dr. Who. Her favourite colour was purple/royal blue, and it suited her sweet hazel eyes. She loved music and listened to a wide variety of music from classical to so-called hard rock. Janet was an avid reader as well. She also loved cooking and gardening. She lived with her parents the last few years of her life. She and her parents tended a nice, large garden in their back yard. They grew both vegetables and flowers. Janet never travelled a great deal, but she had cousins in Washington state whom she visited from time to time. She told me how beautiful and serene Washington was and how she could envision herself living there, but she never made the decision to relocate. Janet could always be content with just her own company, and I suppose that came from having been an only child. She had one of the most gentle and kind natures of anyone I have ever known, and she always focused on "the bright side" of every situation. I met Janet and her then husband David after I accepted a job at the company in Houston where they both worked. David worked in the engineering department, and Janet worked in accounting. We quickly became friends, and she remained my dear, dear friend until she passed more than twenty years later in 2002. I was very sad that I did not see her before she passed, but her mum told me she did not want to see anyone at that point. I imagine she was making peace with herself in being force to leave this world. She found a lump in one of her arms that did not seem to want to go away. In fact, it began to grow larger, and it was painful. She consulted her doctor and discovered it was cancer, but she never shared that information with anyone, not even with her parents until the end. Janet very sadly passed just one month after the diagnosis at the relatively young age of 44 leaving behind her elderly parents and friends such I who loved her and were grateful that she had been a part of their lives. Although Janet was only a couple of years older than I, in hindsight, I now realise that she was often like a mother to me than a sister. She listened to everything I ever said. Anything I shared with her was always kept in strictest confidence. She was always there for me. She never judged me or anyone else. She never made anyone feel "less." She was always supportive and generous and kind. If she loved you, she loved you unconditionally, just as a mother would do. As I now move into the last years of my own life, I look back over my lifetime and count perhaps three or four friends that I shall always love and never forget, and Janet was one of those dear friends. Her friendship and love made a difference in my life and I am sure in the lives of others I never knew. She did not become a great artist, writer, poet, singer, or leader of humankind, but she provided love and support to those around her. She was the personification of gentle love and kindness in a world that too often is unbelievably brutal and devastating. Thus, Janet Carol Kiser Dubois did not live in vain. I miss her more than words can say. Her passing left a hole in my heart and in my life that can never be filled. Goodbye, Janet. I love and miss you so much. Rest in peace my dear, dear friend.
