Gaston Winfield Cromwell was my Great-Great Grandfather. He is the one on the far left in this picture and the others are 3 of his 4 brothers: Pleasant Galespie "Plez," Harvey Francis and John Caraway "Johnny" Cromwell. Not pictured is their brother, William Augustus, who passed away at a young age.
The Cromwell family originated in England. Gaston's Grandfather, Isaac Cromwell, emigrated to Virginia, where he became a wealthy and influential planter. He later moved to North Carolina.
Gaston's father, John Stewart Cromwell, who was born in Virginia, became a pioneer farmer and stockman of Lafayette County, Mississippi. He joined the Confederate Army and died during the Civil War near New Hope, Georgia. He was a Mississippi Sharpshooter. John is buried in a mass grave, therefore, there is no marker.
Gaston Winfield Cromwell was born in Lafayette County, Mississippi. He later moved to Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma Territory, and secured a farm of 120+ acres, 8 miles northeast of Wanette, Oklahoma. There he carried on diversified farming and stockraising, in both of which direction his industry and good management skills won him marked success. He was a deacon and member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Daughter of John Caraway "Johnny" and Effie L. (Turner) Cromwell. Granddaughter of John Stewart and Elizabeth Jane (Jones) Cromwell.
Theresa was never married. She graduated from Norman High School in 1928 and graduated from the University of Oklahoma in Library Science.
She worked as a Librarian for Phillips 66 Oil Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and retired from there. She moved back to Norman in 1973 where she lived with her Aunt, Mrs. Irene Kimmons.

Dr. Harvey Cromwell, Sr.
Dr. Harvey Cromwell, Sr. was the son of Sheldon Winfield and Martha Jane "Mattie" (Hibbard) Cromwell.
Dr. Cromwell was the proud honoree at dedication ceremonies of the Harvey Cromwell Communications Center at MSCW (later Mississippi University for Women) where there is hardly a facet of life that had not been shaped by his twenty-eight years of service.
Dr. Cromwell helped to establish the first graduate program and from 1966-74 served as the first Dean of the graduate school. He was chairman of the committee, which formulated the first mini-course program and served as the first Director of Continuing Education.
Even after his retirement in 1975, as Dean of the graduate school, he continued in a part-time position as Grant Specialist for the university.

Capt. John Philip Cromwell
Capt. John Philip Cromwell was the most senior submariner awarded the Medal of Honor in World War II and one of the three submarine officers who received it posthumously. In some ways similar to his fellow honoree, Howard Gilmore, Cromwell consciously chose to sacrifice his own life to safeguard the lives of others in a tragic incident that took place in November 1943. And then, the tragedy of his death on USS Sculpin (SS-191) was further compounded by an irony of fate that is still pondered sadly today. John Cromwell was born in Henry, Illinois, on 11 September 1901 and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with the class of 1924. He served in the battleship USS Maryland (BB-46) and in several submarines, eventually commanding USS S-20 (SS-125). At the beginning of World War II, he was on the staff of Commander, Submarines Pacific, running Submarine Divisions 203 and 44. Later he was also assigned command of Submarine Division 43, with additional duty in command of Submarine Division 44, flying his pennant in Sculpin.

Fred & Mary practiced in Georgia. My Grandmother married Rev. James Gaston Cromwell in 1941 and they resided in Southern Illinois.

After graduating from a public high school, attended Cornell University on a full tuition scholarship until the market crash of ’29. Transferring to the University of Illinois, she eventually obtained her AB in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1944. Henry Cromwell
Former owner of Spinney Abbey, and one who actually dwelt there, is the fourth son of Oliver Cromwell, Henry Cromwell. He lived in Spinney Abbey after his retirement from his office as Lord Deputy of Ireland at the Restoration. He was a well-respected and capable man, and having petitioned the King was allowed to continue living in peace there despite his father's fate. He owned Spinney from 1659 to his death in 1673.
