Religious Emblem Boy's Death Clue
A scapular, believed to have been worn by an eight-year-old schoolboy who drowned in the sea on Sunday, was found on Werribee beach yesterday.
The dead boy, Patrick William Coad, of Kingsville Stree, Kingsville, was found on Sunday
floating in the sea near South Werribee, 20 miles from his home.
He disappeared from his home 16 hours earlier. Patrick's parents told police he would never go out without wearing his scapular, a religious emblem consisting of two small squares of cloth.
It was found on top of a steep clay cliff, 15 feet high about 50 yeards south of where the naked body was found.
Homicide detectives yesterday questioned scores of children at St. Augustine's school in Somerville Road, Yarraville, which Patrick attended.
They took statements from 24 children - both boys and girls - who had been approached by men, and offered rides in cars.
Appeal. This morning, police will sift through statements in an effort to piece together descriptions of men who have been offering young children car rides. Police so far have found no trace of the clothes worn by the boy and detectives have appelared to the public to notify them if they find any clothing similar to those worn by the boy.
When last seen Patrick was wearing a V-necked green long-sleeved pullover, blue denim shorts and a T shirt.

Missing Boy Drowned
A postmortem examination on eight-year-old Patrick William Coad, of Kingsville Street, Kingsville, who was found Sunday floating in the sea near South Werribee beach, 20 miles from his home, revealed that he died from drowning.
Patrick disappeared from his home 16 hours earlier. His body was naked when found.
He had a broken hip. Police believe that he may have fallen from a 15 ft cliff on to the rocks near where his body was found.
Police are anxious to interview a man in his late 30's and driving a cream late model car who was seen talking to the boy near his home about 6:30pm on Saturday.
The boy's clothing is missing despite an Intensive search by homicide detectives and Footscray police.

The Scottish Hero disembarked her passengers in Maryborough, Queensland on the 3rd August 1886. Mary and her family did not move from Queensland to Tasmania until after 1896, 30 years after their arrival in Australia. All of the children of John and Bridget Monaghan's births were registered in Queensland. Mary Magdalene Monaghan married Claude James Coad in July 1909 at Zeehan, on the West Coast of Tasmania.
