He had an older sister Dora, and younger siblings Henry, Diana, Sherman, and Helene Clevenson. He enlisted on December 17, 1941 in Hartford Connecticut and served in the US Air Force. After returning from the war, Sam worked at newspapers including the "Syracuse Herald-Journal" and the "Boston Traveler". In 1962, Sam and his family moved to Schenectady as he worked for "The Union-Star". This is where he became actively involved in the local Jewish community and a few years later on September 23, 1965, "The Jewish World" debuted. Samuel Clevenson was the founder and publisher of "The Jewish World" newspaper. He married Pearl Groopman in 1952 in Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA.
