Agnes, known as Enid Noack, was my mother. She had six children, Gwenda, Raymond, Marlene, Lauris, Jennifer and Ruth (me). The first 5 children were born within a 7 year period, then a further gap of 6 years before I was born. Prior to my birth in November 1952, I understand that my father had an extramarital relationship, and that my conception and birth was an attempt to patch this up. Unfortunately my father continued in a relationship outside of the marriage, resulting in the birth of another child (I believe this was a boy). Mum, although a very homely and caring mother, could no longer cope with this situation, and divorced my father, something that was quite unusual in the late 50s. Eventually in July 1959, Mum moved away from the family home in Pascoe Vale South to West Coburg, taking with her all of us children, although at this time only Jenny and I were still at school (Jenny in 1st form and myself in grade 3.). Our older siblings were all working at this time. Mum started to make a few friends with her neighbours and continued to attend the same church that she had attended since before her marriage, however one of my sisters has said that Mum always felt ostracised. These were days that women did not divorce. As a child and adolescent, I never thought of my Mum as a particularly strong woman. She was just Mum, very homely and very caring of us. She always managed to serve wholesome food, kept the house extremely clean and tidy, and made sure that we also were very clean and tidy. Money was not readily available for luxuries and Mum sewed and knitted most of our clothes. Another sister has commented that we may not have had much money, but we were the cleanest kids in West Coburg. I also remember that our faces always shone as they were so clean. Mum did have a hard life, however my memories are that she accepted this and got on with living and raising her children to be good people. Mum died of a stroke in July 1977, one month short of her 61st birthday. Her own mother had died of the same ailment in 1951. Mum was the only child to her parents, although her father had two daughters from a prior marriage, Nellie and Hilda. Their mother died in childbirth I believe. Mum's parents married in England and came to Australia with Nellie and Hilda. They settled in Foitcray, where Mum was born. I believe Mum's father worked on the railways, and her mother looked after the two little girls, followed by Mum when she arrived. The family moved to Phillips Street, West Coburg, where they lived at the time when each of Mum's parents died, however I do not know when this move took place. When Mum divorced Dad, she moved us children to 71 Saunders Street, West Coburg, only 3 streets away from where she grew up.
