My Grandmother's maiden name was Leola Cheney. I have researched the Cheney family back to Viking ancestors who settled in Normandy, France with Rollo Rognvaldsson. The original surname of what is now Cheney, was Rolfsson which became de Caen after settling in Normandy, then became de Cheyney, meaning "of Oak". In 1066 the Cheney ancestors fought with William the Conqueror who won the Battle of Hastings and became King of England. The English version of the surname is Cheney, which has become permanent. The Cheney relatives were rewarded with many English titles, manor houses and castles, which most remained in the Cheney families for over 600 years. Many of the Cheney ancestors were quite wealthy aristocrats, and Elizabeth Cheney was great-grandmother to Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, and Catherine Howard, three wives of King Henry the VIII of England, thus making her great-great-grandmother to King Edward VI, the son of Henry the VIII and Jane Seymour, and Elizabeth I, daughter of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII.
