There was one question, asked and repeated by neighbors, police, investigators: How could this happen?
Five people were dead, one other suffering very serious injuries from the Lindsay shootings.
The man who pulled the trigger had been free on $2,500 bail, posted Thursday after being ordered to stand trial on charges of kidnapping and assaulting his wife.
How could he be freed to kill the woman he was to stand trial for trying to kill, people asked.
As they shook their heads at the gap in the justice system, they pieced together puzzles in the law with personalities of the characters in the killings.
There was Florene Cathey, described by all who'd talked with her as quiet and shy.
After telling of being flung into the Friant-Kern Canal, Mrs. Cathey had answered a defense attorney's question, saying the whole thing was an accident.
The Tulare County District Attorney's Office pursued the case. It subpoenaed her for a Nov. 10 preliminary hearing.
Mrs. Cathey didn't show up.
Mike Brown, a district attorney's investigator, found her hiding in Muskogee, Okla., on Nov. 30.
Continuances moved the preliminary hearing for Chester Cathey, her husband, up to Dec. 8.
Invwstigators had to talk Mrs. Cathey into returning to California and testifying.
They succeeded despite her
terror of being hurt by her husband.
"We hid her in motels," recalled Ralph Tucker, chief district attorney investigator. "We begged her to stay in motels to keep her husband from finding her." When she had failed to show up in court Nov. 10, Judge Patrick Sullivan of Lindsay Justice Court had freed Cathey without bail. The prime witness against him wasn't around, and there seemed to be no case.
Thursday, Judge Chris White of Woodlake Justice Court sat for Sullivan.
In ordering Cathey to stand trial, White revoked his release without bail. He placed him in custody unless he could post $2,500 bail.

Marie was the love of his life and they enjoyed vacations and dinner and dancing Were always having fun with friends and family. He was a big cut up and loved telling jokes. He will be missed by many friends and family.
