This is the ice cream shop right across the street from Aunt Violet's old apt in Frewsburg NY. In the mid 1970s, all I had to do was go out her front door, cross the yard, cross the street, and there I was, at the Igloo (now renamed as The Corner Scoop) Ice Cream Shop. My mother's favorite was Maple Walnut or Butter Pecan Perry's Hard Ice Cream Cones. My Dad liked Black Cherry Perry's Hard Ice Cream Cones the best. I used to dabble in the Mexican Sundae a lot. My sister liked Hot Fudge Sundaes. And we all loved the Banana Splits.

The people in my family who lived right across the street from it were Aunt Violet, and Santina and Denny Johnson. Santina and Denny lived in a house that looked like it was planted in the middle of Aunt Violet's front yard! right across the street from the Igloo / Corner Scoop Ice Cream Shop. We stayed in touch for many years. Santina moved to 126 Sampson Street and eventually became my son David's babysitter so I could go to work sometimes. She was an awesome person to talk to, and she had great stories to tell about her time growing up in an all girls parochial school, and her times spent in both Africa and Italy. Aunt Violet eventually moved over to Cherry St Senior Housing in Frewsburg.

I tried to stay in touch with cousin Marcia, Great Aunt Violet, and Santina and Denny Johnson, after my mother Linda’s death in 1980 as much as I could. By pure stroke of luck, I gave Aunt Violet a ride home one day from the Armory when she had fallen down some concrete steps. My heart skipped a beat when I realized this woman I was picking up off the pavement, with a bloody scraped up nose, was actually my Great Aunt Violet, whom I had not seen in a long, long time. This is how I learned my Great Aunt Vi had moved into senior housing behind the Hotel Frewsburg on Cherry St. So I began to visit her there occasionally, until she moved to a nursing home and then passed away in 2008. I once even unwittingly picked up a hitchhiker, who turned out to be Aunt Violet's grandson, (Terri 'Travis' and Marcia's third born son), my cousin Stevie, when he was hitchhiking back home to Frewsburg one day. Imagine both of our surprises to find out we were related. I had not seen him since I was a kid. I was told later he also died but I have no details on this. Anders August Anderson (Uncle Andy) is in the picture from circa 1976-1979 surrounded by his four sisters in Frewsburg, NY at his sister Violet's apt behind the bowling alley in Frewsburg NY. Violet is doing the dishes, with her back toward all her siblings, who are behind her in this picture. From left to right, Anne, Andy, Linnea, (standing in a light green sleeveless shirt) Violet in white shirt, and Lillian in a dark shirt, crouched down on the floor. It was a rare occasion since Anne (sitting at the table in this pic) lived in California most of the time. Aunt Violet can be seen on the far right with her hands in her sink, doing the dishes. As I reflect more and more on this picture and the fact I had my very own copy of it growing up, I suspect I (Gina) may be the one who took this picture of my grandmother Linnea (in the sleeveless shirt) and all her siblings sometime around 1975-1979. I was in camera club at school, at Frewsburg Central Schools between my seventh and eighth grade years, (about forty six years ago now). This photo was taken on C 110 Kodak Film. I kept a copy of this photo on the cover of my personal green photo album for many years along with a color photo printed from identical film, rounded edges color print, of our friend Lucille Hedberg Coombs. I had two cameras during those years, (one with built in flash, and the other with a disposable flash bulb you had to put on top of it, that only had four flashes before it had to be replaced) and both of my cameras took C 110 Kodak Film. I think I may have given the negatives of this photo to Gramma Donoghue so she could print more copies of this photo and share them with her siblings. (Either that, or Aunt Anne's son Steve Blazyak of California took this picture in Aunt Vi's apartment. He is the person who scanned it and uploaded it on our Facebook family page. But I think it is cropped since I remember being able to see Aunt Lillian's knees in my print copy of this photo.) I recognize this setting very well, since my mother stopped by for "coffee" with Violet frequently at that table, and I was frequently looking out from that exact same position looking out at the kitchen, from the living room in Violet's straight shot linear laid apt, with my 2 DC comic books and a four pack of sticky red licorice. My mother Linda gave me a few quarters to buy these around the corner, from the Frewsburg Newsroom, every time we visited Aunt Violet. Comic books were only 25 cents each. I bought and collected DC comic books from 1973-1979, eventually accumulating over 300 of them, all purchased one or two at a time, while my mother was visiting Aunt Violet for "coffee". That is a lot of coffee and a lot of comic books.

When my licorice was all gone, and I had finished reading my comic books, but my Mom and Aunt Violet were not yet done with their "coffee" I would sit and watch Aunt Violet's little black and white television in the living room, favoring shows that came in Color, even on a Black and White TV, like "THAT GIRL".

Her obituary says: Violet J. Carlson, 87, of Heritage Park, formerly of 25 Cherry St., Frewsburg, passed away at 12 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, in the facility.
She was born Oct. 11, 1921 to the late Carl and Marie Anderson in James-town, N.Y.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Carlson who passed away Nov. 3, 1969; and her son, Robert Carlson who passed away March 21, 2005.
She is survived by two daughters: Marcia Johnson and Barbara Hinson, both of Jamestown; a sister, Lillian Rodgers of Tennessee; 15 grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was a wonderful mother and grandmother who loved to cook and bake for her family. She enjoyed reading and knitting.
She was a cook at the former Frewsburg Covenant Home and also a cook at the Lutheran Home until her retirement.

Queen of Sydney, British Columbia ferry launched for service in 1960 by my grandparent, Mrs. Mildred Alsbury & A.T. Tom Alsbury. First Captain of Sydney was family friend & my grandfather's I.O.O.F. lodge brother, "Capt. John Horne". At the time the Queen of Sydney was retired from BC ferries service the vessel was purchased by my sister's husband Art Klassen. The sale of Sydney was brokered by her first Captain, retired John Horne.
