Early Bruckners

These are the earliest records we have of the Bruckner family.

See headstone and info at Find A Grave Memorial ID 38215700 According to Sophia Gehrke, Paul was the first to be buried in the Latimer Cemetery. They sailed to America May 1869 and landed in Baltimore, MD. The were married either in Baltimore MD or Winchester IL, probably Baltimore, MD Pre 1985 story told to me by Sophia Gehrke: "Paul and Sophie Bruckner came to America in 1869 and landed in Maryland and didn't have enough money to go to Illinois, so Sophie taught German to a colored family and the family begged them to stay with them. Paul wanted to go to Illinois, so when he made a little more money they went on to Illinois. Between Sophie teaching German and Paul working on the farm they gathered enough money to go on to Illinois where his cousin lived, which was Winchester, Illinois. They later moved to Mendota where 2 ( I think 4) of their children were born. They lived there for 9 years and Sophie's doctor said to get of of this climate because of health reasons, so they came to Kansas to the German settlement around Delavan, Kansas. They lived there until the deaths of both Paul and Sophie."
See headstone and info on Find A Grave Memorial ID 38215736 On Sophia F Gehrke's death certificate it states her mothers name is Sophia Marguret Roeser. Headstone shows Sophie Roeser. I was not able to find a death certificate under Roeser so am presuming it is spelled Roser. Per Sophia Gehrke " her mother Sophie was the only one that came to America. She did have 2 brothers: Gustov and Edward Bruckner (Edward was tongue tied) and one sister Bobert Bruckner."

See headstone and info at Find A Grave Memorial ID 59855967 In the Bruckner Bible and written in German, her name is Karohlina Harieth Bruckner. WRITTEN BY HATTIE YAKLE AND READ AT ONE OF FAMILY REUNIONS HELD AT CITY PARK, HERINGTON, KANSAS. Paul Bruckner was born Sept. 13, 1845 at Lindenburg Socks Meingern, Germany. May 1869 he sailed to America with Sophia Roser of Rotheul Socks, Meingern, Germany, landing at Baltimore, Maryland. There he worked on a farm to earn money to go further. Later he came to Winchester, Ill. and then married Sophia Roser, Sept. 13, 1869. There they lived for five years where Louis and George were born. Then in 1874 they moved to Mendota, Ill where they lived on a farm. While there brother John was born, also Hattie was born there Jan. 25, 1875. Feb. 1878 they came to Kansas, landing in Abilene. They bought the site homestead of 80 acres, 5 miles northeast of Hope, Kansas and lived there one year. In the winter of 1879, the four children all took scarlet fever and were just recovering when on the night of Feb. 23, 1879 a huge prairie fire came upon us, burning our house, stable, team of mules, cow and calf, chickens, in fact most everything we had. But mother got us children out of the house before it fell. Also an armful of bedding which she placed on the ground and put us children on it and we were there several hours before anyone could come to our rescue. Father had run through the hot ashes to cut the ropes from the mules, burning his feet and hands and arms severely, so he was laid up for some time. But by the kindness of the people and good neighbors, they put us up a small house. Then father worked the rest of the summer to get another team of horses and a cow. One horse was black and the other one a blend bay and the cow was white. Sister Minnie was born Jan 6, 1880. Sister Anna was born May 28, 1882. In September 1882 we moved to the farm north of Delavan where we lived in pioneer days. Had lots of sickness in the family which made it hard on all of us. But we were blessed with lots of good things too. This is where the rest of the children were born. Charley was born June 8, 1884. Eva was born July 20, 1886. Sophia was born Oct. 19, 1888. Edward was born March 5, 1891. August was born May 26, 1893. In October 1893 we all contacted typhoid fever, but all recovered without the loss of one. Father passed away April 2, 1916 and our family circle was broken. November 7, 1920 Lewis passed away. March 23, 1922 mother was taken. January 1, 1925 Ed was struck by a train at Wilsey, died Jan. 4, 1925. So this has made our family circle broken up, but we must cheer up and look around us and try and cheer up and see all the blessings we have received all these days since. See the number of our brothers and sisters and their families, that we can meet with today and hold this reunion in honor of our Father, Paul Bruckner on his birthday anniversary of Sept. 13, 1845.

See headstone/info on Find A Grave Memorial ID 63236051 I had Sophia write out the correct spelling of her middle name Frederika. Death certificate states Fredericka. They were married at the home of her father Paul Bruckner's home and not in a church. Grandma told me that she made her own wedding dress and it was a shirt and blouse. In 1982 she still had some of the lace and flowers. She also told me that her father-in-law Herman thought Sophia was just wonderful. He didn't like cosmetics and perfumes and Sophia was an old plain farm girl so she was alright for his son. CONTRIBUTED BY MRS SOPHIA GEHRKE, 1967 "I earned by first nickel, baby sitting" We had some elderly neighbors named, Biehler. They had two grandchildren about the age of 4 and 5 years old. Their parents were attending the Topeka Fair and left these two grandchildren with their grandparents. The grandparents asked by mother if I could spend the day with them so I stayed that day with them. One of the children was a boy, the other a little girl. The little boy was a mischievous one and had a bad habit of biting the little girl so we did have to keep close watch over him. In the evening these grandparents took me home and to my surprise they gave me a nickel. I kept that nickel for some months, taking a good look at it every once in a while. Then one day my older sisters and my oldest brother, Lewis, and I went to a Sunday school picnic at Parkerville, Kansas. I took my nickel with me to buy me something. All afternoon I was trying to think of something I could buy with my precious nickel and I finally bought one large orange. I took it home and the next morning at breakfast, I peeled the orange and tore it in sections and passed it around and by the time it came back to me I did get a couple of sections, but I was very happy. This happened in the year of 1896. HISTORY OF SOPHIA F. BRUCKNER GEHRKE TAPED ON JUNE 15, 1980 I the youngest daughter of Paul Bruckner and his wife Sophie (Sophia) nee Roeser (Roser) Bruckner, was born on their farm home 4 miles north of Delavan, Kansas on Oct. 19, 1888. I attended public school at district 60 located 2 1/2 miles from our home. Transportation was on two feet. My lunch pail was a shining syrup pail. The school was a one room wooden structure with the capacity of 30 pupils and the grades taught there were from 1 thru 8. Lighting consisted of kerosene lamps at either side of the building. Water system was a wooden bucket with a tin dipper and each pupil helped himself. Water was carried by the pupils from a farm house a 1/4 of a mile away. Usually in the morning and again at noon, sometimes the teachers went with us. The school year of 1902-1903 I attended German Lutheran Christian Day school at St. John's Lyon Creek. I was confirmed in April 1903, I thereby became a member of St. John's Lyon Creek Church being baptized at an early date. I then attended my home public school in 1903-1904 1904-1905 school years. In May of 1905 I received my diploma. I then felt I was needed in the family home to assist in the many household duties. I will mention a few of them and let you be the judge. To begin with we milked cows, made butter, and cottage cheese. The buttermilk was used as a beverage, also in making delicious cakes, cookies and pancakes. We also made yeast, then made the bread, rolls and other baked goods. Next we put eggs under the old sitting hens for several weeks to hatch baby chickens. Chickens were raised to furnish eggs plus meat for the table. A big garden was planted of which furnished fresh vegetables for the family, also harvested 100 lbs of seed potatoes weather permitting. A fall garden was planted to furnish fresh vegetables of which was canned or stored for winter use. In early autumn we drove to a nearby orchard to gather winter apples which some were canned, some dried on the porch roof and others made into apple butter for winter use. Then came butchery time, farmers helped each other as most farmers butchered one to three hogs at a time which did require much help. This was done by scalding and scraping hair and scraping the skin. The meat was cleaned, cooked and made into sausage. They also cut up the meat to have ham and bacon to be cured. The lean meat trimmings from the shoulders and ham was made into sausage which were fried and placed into stone jars and covered with melted lard for summer consumption, here is where the mother and girls came in. They cup up lard and put into the large iron kettle vat of mothers. Most folks owned their own sausage grinders and stuffing machines. In spring months came time to make work clothes. I made many men's work shirts, ladies house dresses and kitchen aprons, also made men's waist overalls as men wore suspenders in these days. Also made pillow cases and sheet wear so we can see how household duties were plentiful then. On April 14, 1910, I was married to a farm boy, Carl Gehrke, and moved to a rent farm near Ramona, Kansas. On Feb. 14, 1911 we moved to a rent farm in the same area, here we became members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where all of our children were baptized by the Rev. C.O. Donachek. On this farm we were blessed with the following children: Arthur born Feb. 18, 1911, Paul Jan. 2, 1913, Edwin July 22, 1914, Carl Jr. Jan. 7, 1917, Oscar Feb. 21, 1919, Harvey Oct. 22, 1921, Lowell Aug. 9, 1927 and Juanita, July 10, 1930. In 1918 we purchased 160 acre pasture land. In 1926 we purchased an 80 acre farm southwest of Herington where I now reside. On Dec. 17, 1938 we moved to this farm. My husband Carl passed away Aug. 19, 1957. In Nov. 1957 by daughter and family came to live with me and have helped and cared for me. I so thank god that he has so graciously given me health and strength to be able to be up and about with a clean mind. Written by me Jan. 1978. Sophia Fredrica Bruckner Gehrke.
