Ted B. Braden - Vietnam - 1966. Ted is already dreaming of hijacking a Boeing 727 and jumping the Aft. stairs.

From "Ramparts" magazine in an article the magazine published about Sgt. Bradens exploits in Africa. Ramparts ceased publication in 1975.

The following appeared in The Macon News on Friday May 20th 1960 on page 8.

Robins Air Force Base - The famed Army paratroopers from Ft. Campbell, Ky., will be the feature attraction of Armed Forces Day Open House here Saturday.

One of the three sky divers is a Ft. Valley native, Sgt. Frist Class Alva J. English. He is a member of the 101st Airborne Division and the Parachute Club of America, a nationwide organization devoted to parachuting as a sport.

His parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. M. English, watched their son make a parachute jump for the first time at last year's Open House observance. Sgt. English, a 12-year paratroop veteran, now has over 300 jumps to his credit.

Other members of the Ft. Campbell Sport Parachute Club to jump Saturday are SFC Robert R. Wightman and Sgt. Ted B. Braden.

There are now more than 10 military clubs engaged in sport parachuting, or sky diving, the Army's newest sport. Sky diving is body control during free fall, during which the jumper reaches a speed of 120 miles per hour. By means of exact co-ordination, the diver can manipulate his body into patterns such as the figure eight. After his steerable parachute opens, the sky diver guides himself toward a ground target.

The following appeared in The Leaf-Chronicle on Thursday February 6th 1964 on page 18. It reads:

STAFF SERGEANT James F. Fowler Jr., in a free fall at 8,000 feet above Fort Campbell's Yamoto Drop zone, calls to his teammate, Staff Sergeant Ted B. Braden: "Hey, Ted - you forgot to brush your teeth. And this is National Dental Health Week! Cut over this way - I'm bringing your toothbrush.

I'd love to know if Sidney is a relative of yours, and if you can share more info (I don't have any more than I've written in these Ancient Faces listings).

This is a school photo I bought from Ebay in the US. What lovely faces! All of the children's names are on the back in clear adult hand, and I've listed them below (click on arrow), front row first, l-r, then 2nd row, etc. Also 9 names are written sideways in a child's hand and spelling, and all those names are repeated in the larger list except "Irene Branden". 21 of the children have pencil or pen Xs on them; not all Xs are visible in the scan. One detail I think is striking is the one non-Caucasian or mixed-race student (Mary Rhinehart). I'm Canadian and not an expert on American racial history so I don't know if this is that unusual for this era of history, or perhaps a clue to the country or area.

These children are not relatives of mine and I am not researching any of these names. Another member commented below to say that s/he may have found some of the children in the 1910 census. The Ebay seller had no further information on where it was from. I would be thrilled to hear if you have information to share with me or if you have or might have found a family member here, but I don't know what school this is or where the photo was taken, or even exactly when (though I guess from 1900-1920, because of the big bows and very few short bobs, etc), so I can't give any more information on that. Check the comments below the names to see other members' thoughts.

A photo of a painting of Euphemia Jackson Braden. I wrote to Edward Braden in Watseka in the 40's to trace the family. He owned this painting and Janet Armbrust sent us this photo. He also had the brass candlestick that came from Scotland with the Bradens when they moved to Ireland (ca 1575). William married Euphemia in 1791. Euphemia lived with her daughter Mary from 1832. She died at her son Robert's at the age of 94 in 1868.

This photo is of my grandfathers Grandmother, Euphemia Jackson Braden. It's the earliest generation of my family of whom I have a photo. It is in the Lewis Family Bible. Grandma Braden was born in Ireland in 1773. She married William Braden in Enniskillen. Her father was a merchant & horse breeder. My cousin Janet Armbrust wrote a book about them 'Love Is Love Forevermore' 1985. They came to America in 1793 & settled in Clarksburg,IN in 1821. William died of fever in 1825 & Euphemia raised the children in his log cabin.
