The Bello family originated in Galicia, a region of Spain with a unique cultural and linguistic heritage. One of the earliest records of the name is found in the registers of the monastery of Celanova, in Galicia, dating from the eleventh century: the name of Arias Bello appears in an entry dated 1064. From Galicia the family branched to other regions of the Christian north, including Leon and Castile. With the Reconquest, the family branched to southern Spain, and became established in such major centers as Seville and Cordoba. There are now branches of the family in virtually every region of Spain.
