Joseph Henry Bayliss married Sarah Anne Cole and then Alice Mary Hobbs my grandmother. My father was from Joseph Henry and Alice Marys union.
Benjamin Bayliss and Johanna Tuzo (Goldsby,Dear). Benjamin my great grandfather married Johanna who was the daughter of Joseph Tuzo and Rebecca Dear. Joseph was married to another lady, they went their seperate ways and Joseph then took up with his redheaded Rebecca Goldsby Dear, who he spent his life with and had two children to Johanna and Priscilla. Both Johanna and Priscilla married Bayliss boys, my g grandmother Johanna married Benjamin and Priscilla married his brother.
Priscilla and Johannas father was a convict and had been sent to Norfolk Island which was a Penal Settlement. He received over 500 lashes for infringements and eventually received a pardon, he went whaling and then went with Matthew Flinders when he circumnavigated Australia.
The next step backwards is Joseph Bayliss the original Joseph in Australia, like his brother John and other siblings was born in Kingswinford. Birmingham UK> Their siblings, mother and father died and the boys served HRH by spending time in the army in India. They returned to England and joined the NSW Army Corp. Joseph came on the 2nd fleet and John came on the 3rd fleet. Joseph was given a convict servant named Ann Taylor Price, Price was her married name, it appears she had stolen 25 yards of cloth from a store, which some say belonged to her husband he had her charged and she was sent for life to the colonies. Eventually Joseph took up with Ann, although Ann could not marry. It appears her husband died back in England and Ann and Joseph married and had their families, they were married at St. Phillips Church in Sydney Australia, St. Phillips is one of the oldest churchesin Sydney probably the oldest if not it would be close. The Garrison Church is another old one. Anyway Josephs brother John arrived on the 3rd fleet and he took up with a convict servant Elizabeth Thomas. On arriving in Australia, Joseph and John served some army time on Norfolk Island. For this they were granted land around the Richmond area on the Nepean River. They farmed, went back to their original trade of nailers. The Baylss family had been nail manufacturers in Kingswinford for centuries. One day my gggg grandmother went to help out a neighbour, the servant was told to offer both her and her daughter Sarah a drink, Sarah was thirteen years old at the time. Anne drank from the bottle as did Sarah, Ann died from accidental poisoning. Sarah however, recovered but was very ill. Eventually Sarah married into a prominent Bathurst family, the Kites names that are attached to this line is Kite, Traill, to name a couple. Joseph moved up to Bathurst with the rest of his family and lived there until he died at Kelso, the rest of the family worked for the family, graziers, horse breeders etc. When Joseph died he was buried with his wife Anne at St. Matthews Church at Windsor. John his brother was buried at St. Peters Richmond with his wife Elizabeth.
Thats the end of the story. From not knowing to having many convicts as ggg grandmothers and ggg grandfathers and gggg grandmothers. To find out that you were able to say you were a first family from pioneer stock in Sydney Cove is a huge thrill but I should have known all this many years ago and been able to talk to my father about it.
regards mavis symonds.
