The portrait was done by George N. Barnard in Painesville, Ohio. G.N. Barnard was born 1819 in Ct, and was considered a pioneer of photography for the nineteenth century. Some historians consider his photos of a grain elevator fire in 1853 to be the first news photography. Barnard also photographed President Lincoln's 1861 inauguration, and later became part of "Brady's Photographic Corps" taking photos of the Civil War, especially noted for a book he produced of Sherman's Campaign and the destruction of Atlanta. Barnard photographed the "Great Fire" in Chicago which also destroyed his studio there, and moved to Painesville, Ohio about 1884. He moved his family to Gadsden, Alabama about 1888, then on to Cedarvale, New York in the early 1890's. His work is found in the National Archives and Library of Congress. George N. Barnard died in 1902.

Before being elected, she was a teacher and very active in charity work. After being elected, she became actively and vocally involved in Native American rights, saying that they were being cheated. The governor of Oklahoma and prominent businessmen collectively convinced the legislature to take away the funding for her office and that ended her political career - but not her advocation for the victims of poor treatment and graft.

Edited April 6, 2010 (5 years later!) to add that I recently received a message from a relative: "My name is Theodore (Ted) Barnard III. This is a picture of my great Uncle. I am named after my Grandfather which is Edward's brother..." How wonderful to find a family connection!

Edited May 14, 2018 (13 years later!) to add a comment that was added below in 2012, in case other searchers don't see them and in case the comments don't come up in searches:
by Margarette Martin: "I know that Ted Barnard was my Grandfather Hubert Eldridge Barnard's brother. Ted was at his wedding with Grace Ophelia Thurmond (Sayre, Beckham Co, Ok, 27 Mar 1934). They divorced when my Mom was 3 years old and her sister was just a few years older. His new wife Ruth, did not want to acknowledge my Mom nor my aunt as being his daughters and they were not allowed to see him. My Mom went to see him a few years before his passing and was amazed at how much I looked like his granddaughter from Ruth. The families were torn apart from the divorce and Cecil and his wife were allowed to continue their relationship with my Mom and her sister. I would love to find out more."

No locations or photographers are identified. This is the only information I have specifically about this photo.
I purchased this in a huge lot of photos from Ebay. They have no traceable history as the seller got them from someone who checks the dumpsters behind estate sales around several states in the midwest! I can only list what is on the individual photos themselves as they all came from different places. That's why I'm posting as many photos as I can, so any more of their history isn't lost. I would be interested to know if they help any family researchers though.
