Joseph was the son of Duncan (b 1825) and Susana Ward. His siblings were Edward (b 1872), Christiana(b 1870), John( b. 1873), Duncan(b 1864), and James (b 1875). I believe that The Father died in 1878. According to Canada's 1880 census Susana was a widow at that time. Joseph married Florence (Flora, Flo) Stevens. Their children were Dorothy (b.1894 and was married to George Summers), Donald (b 1896 and was married to Caroline Townes), Bruce Edward )b 10-08-1898 and was married to Eathyl Leona Burke). Bruce and Eathyl (toots as grandpa called her) are my grandparents. My Mother is Wilma Jean Avery.

I know her as Mrs Avery when I was a young high school volunteer and later as a staff member at the Protestant Guild for the Blind. Sister Elizabeth Harnett worked in the main bulding of the school while Claire Avery worked as a resident staff in a small house across from the main bulding. She had a lovely daughter named Rose who was an artist but at the time I didn't know much about her. Apparently she was an exceptional talent and intelligent enough to attend the Rhode Island School of Design and Yale University. I am clearly impressed by her daughter and the simple life she lived in lower Manhattan.
Sometimes in her free time Mrs Avery would play a few holes on the country club around the school grounds. I remember walking with her one day when she played a hole close to the building.
I am sad she passed and even more sad to hear her daughter Rose passed from that terrible sickness. It is sad to know a mother passes before her only child.
Not everyone liked her at first glance because sometimes people misunderstand for whatever reasons. People are born and raised a certain way and they become set in their ways often. But reading what she did with Rose's canvasses / paintings was really awesome. They won't be lost or destroyed. Rose's legacy is kept alive in her works. I am sorry to say that I did not have the opportunity to say goodbye to her and her mom Claire Avery.
I remembered when was about to retire, she bought a place on West Newton Street in Boston. She had plans to live there and get passive income from renting out rooms. But eventually she sold it and moved to Stuart, Florida. But I think she also had a place down on the cape in Massachusetts.
I remember helping her paint the rooms and she paid people to renovate the property. In my opinion, some of the people she hired took advantage of her and did a half decent job. She used to drive a VW shift car.
I lost touch when I had my own life to live and busy with work and starting my own family.
She worked at the Guild for the Reverend Wesley G. Price. Eventually the school and residential program for the multi handicapped closed.
I didn't know much about her family but right now in my old age I wish I knew more about her, other then the conversations we had when we worked at the Guild.
