Private Leo Bernard Allan, 2/26th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
He was one of over 2000 Allied prisoners of war (POW) held in the Sandakan POW camp in north Borneo, having been transferred there from Singapore as a part of B Force. The 1494 POW's that made up B Force, were transported from Changi on 7 July 1942 on board the tramp ship Ubi Maru, arriving in Sandakan Harbour on 18 July 1942.
Private Allan, aged 24, died as a prisoner of the Japanese on 21 February 1945. He was the son of Bernard and Clara Allan. He is commemorated on the Labuan Memorial Panel 13. After winning a scholarship to study acting at 'The Old Vic' she began her stage career at the 'Lyric Theatre' aged 17 and made her first film in 1931. She went to Hollywood in 1933 and found considerable success before returning to Britain in 1938 following a dispute with MGM studios.
Elizabeth Allan appeared in about 50 films in total from 1931 to 1967. Later in her career she became a popular personality on British television. She died of undisclosed causes on 27 July 1990 in Hove, East Sussex aged 80.
