Why do we think it is an actor? Couldn't it be a magician? I thought it looked like Ray Milland.

I believe that is a magician, not an actor. Looks like Howard Thurston, a very famous magician in the 20s-30s.

I googled the ones I wasn't familiar with and I'm familiar with the others from Mischa Auer up. Not one of these guesses is correct. I'm with you, Dan Tyler. I'm stumped.

there is a second image of him in a car surrounded by some other people, two of which are my family members. Neither photo has any marks on the back that might help narrow down the possibilities. There is a sign in the background of the group photo that might help add some context.

Of all the suggestions, Don Ameche is the most likely. I googled for images of him - this would be later, probably 50s if it's him. Definitely NOT any of the other actors names. I also googled 1930s magicians. No likely candidate there. When I tried to click on the links to her other photos, both took me to a Walmart ad! Grrrrr!!
