Have you heard of "Tiny Tim"? This is a wedding photo of him with his first wife, "Miss Vicky".
Tiny Tim's birth name was Herbert Buckingham Khaury. He was known for singing in a falsetto voice - much like Rudy Vallée, from whom he learned by listening. He appeared on many tv shows, but it was on The Tonight Show that he truly became famous.
He was 37 years old when he married 17 year old Miss Vicki on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" on December 17, 1969, with 40 million people watching. The wedding was the highest-rated episode in American tv late night show history. They had a daughter, Tulip Victoria, born in 1971 and they divorced in 1977. Vicki went on to marry several more times, Tiny Tim married twice more before he died in 1996 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Joy Midkiff Alba Seems odd to us now, but between the late 1800's and around 1920 or so, a 10 to 20 year age difference between bride and groom was not unusual. In general, middle-class men were expected to be settled and able to afford supporting a wife and coming children before he married, and that meant being in their 20s and 30s and established in a profession or job. The wife was expected to be young enough to have lots of babies, partly because so many children didn't live past childhood.
It's all about what the society of the time period says is proper, but there are many factors involved...class, health, compatibility, family approval or disapproval, etc.
Society's notions of proper changes with time, so we can't really judge some things that were or were not done in a time period different from our own.
I watched the wedding. I thought it really odd that her parents would agree to this. Her father gave her away! Maybe they were seeing dollar signs. From what I have read about him he did seem to be a sincerely nice person but obviously something about all of their thinking was not right.
Curtis M. Scaparrott You’re so rude! Trying to pick up every woman on public posts! I ought to friend you so I could block you and never see your face again.
I didn't see the wedding. I was only 9 years old and the Tonight show was past my bedtime. I did see him on Laugh-in at least once. What a trip he was!
Met him in the airport in Dallas. He was headed to Odessa Tx and I was headed to Midland, TX. He invited me to his show and he was very talented. He drank quite a few Tecate's that night. 1985
My Mom and Dad met him at some function in Mpls. A few years before he died. She was tickled pink! I only remember him being with an ukulele and singing " Tip Toe thru the Tulips"on maybe Ed Sullivan show or Laugh in?
Liz Worden Jones I think you have to remember that in that era it was more acceptable than it is now, but even worse Jerry lee Lewis who married his 13 year old cousin and then there was Elvis Presley, they never get mentioned as gross though, even though to me that was worse than tiny tim.
Victoria's mother was Emma Budinger. Her father was Allan Budinger. She has siblings Judith, Gene, Allene, and Tracy.
"Vicky" (a teenager) married entertainer Tiny Tim (Herbert Buckingham Khaury) on the Johnny Carson show - the Tonight Show. The show brought in high ratings: (from IMDb) "Vicki Budinger is known for Pat Paulsen's Half a Comedy Hour (1970), The Ed Sullivan Show (1948) and The Mike Douglas Show (1961). She was previously married to Tiny Tim. Posed nude for the October 1975 issue of Oui Magazine. Age 17 when she married Tiny Tim, 20 years her senior, on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962). They met 6 months earlier when she asked him to sign a book of his poetry during his appearance at a Philadelphia department store. The ceremony remains the highest-rated episode in American TV late night show history."
After her separation with Tiny Tim she was supporting the couple's daughter which they had in 1971. See Miss Vicki was go-go dancer for details.
