Beautiful wedding photo of Tama Kura (or Kuva) and Otella Kuhtik taken in Boston around 1900. This photo was found in an antique shop - we hope distant family members might recognize them!
Sonja Skirka-Harwood: Yes, tämä = this and kuva = picture (or photo; valokuva = photograph, but we Finns often say only 'kuva' when talking about photos). :)
Could be... I haven't heard that name before, but it's possible. Are you familiar with the group Finnish Genealogy? Perhaps somebody could help you find out the origin of the name there. Check
Hopefully a couple later in love arranged marriage?? Who knows?? The Bride looks like it is,, The Groom looks like he is enjoying the whole thing!! What ever and how long !! Rest in Peace!! Best wishes for you both!!
I thought the same thing. She definitely didn't look happy on her wedding day, but the groom had a definite smirk on his face. His little "cat ate the canary" smile says it all.
The arrangement worked and didn't work back! Very thankful we get to choose now a days. I had extended family members say some use to get ( the groom) use to get paid for the daughter being married off farms , estates etc,,,,, I feel sorry for thinking women went through such ordeals!!
Her dress is beautiful , she looks a little stiff, not smiling while the gentlemans got a smile hope they had a happy marriage :-) nice couple though .
Back in those days, that was a definite possibility. The groom may have even paid her father for her as he has the air of a well to do gentleman finally getting just what he wanted.
If that was the case with the arranged marriage then a cant really blame her for been stiff must have been scary marry sombody who you didnt really know, we,ll never know what sort of life she had we can only guess :-)
sad that so many of these wonderful old photos wind up in antique stores ... probably nobody in the family knew who the heck they were! very sad. I had a lady contact me thru ancestry because she had found a photo in an antique store in Kentucky and it had a name on the back ... the name of my great uncle. she had actually gone to the trouble of trying to find relatives ... so unexpected and so very touching. I had never seen his face before and it meant the world ... wouldn't take a dime for all her trouble ...
I buy vintage photos at antique stores bring them home Matt and frame them and display them. I love all my photos. It would be nice to know who they are but I call them my angels. I have many baby pictures in christening gowns.
If this is what you mean by a christening gown it was actually used by the photographer to cover what might be dirty or drab clothes underneath and were also helpful for hiding the mother as that was the fashion back then. You can see both babies are wearing the same gown and no I don't know who they except their parents were very likely siblings or cousins to my great grandparents.
How about having a muck around for me. I have a picture on here, if you scroll down, you will see it, of four ladies in big hate. The picture has a hole right in the middle of it. Can you fix that. I tried, but made a mess of it.

Antique and old photos showing weddings and anniversaries through the centuries.
Did you know that the white wedding dress was popularized in the West by Queen Victoria in the 1800's? In the East, a red wedding dress is considered good luck.
Regardless of particular customs or...
