Often homes in Europe don't have built-in closets or cabinetry - most is free-standing and belongs to individual home-owners or renters and is removed upon vacating the home. Just a thought.
I thought the same thing, Desiree RahmanDesiree....this is just before hell opened its maw and swallowed up whatever decency was left of their society, which wasn't much.
Looking at the stern faces of the parent - and especially the grandmother - maybe they did know what was coming. And who knows what side they would be on? The one that claimed they never knew a thing and were completely innocent - or the other side that actually embraced the new order but conveniently forgot after the war? And the kids - were they there when Berlin was thoroughly bombed out? Lived through the rubble, the lack of food, the lack of shelter? And the shame! No big cupboards to hold their belongings and of course the chances were they didn´t have any belongings left. Compared to what other people, millions and millions, had to suffer through those years, maybe this family fared better - at least their odds were better. But I still see catastrophe looming in that picture.
This was during the german Great Depression millions of people were unemployed. Children were dying of malnutrition and hunger related illnesses. These people must have been pretty well off somehow
