I dunno... His clothes and chaps look like they have been worn and not just some picture garb. His hand are those of a hard working individual. I bet the other side of those chaps have a club and a spade on them perhaps to represent his love of playing cards. I'm going for authentic.

They must be his fancy chaps then. I doubt he worked in them since the extra decorations on them would have made them cost more. Hard to tell if they're worn since it's not a color photo, and the black-and-white photos make fabrics and leather difficult to distinguish between color, texture, and wear.
He was listed in the 1940 census as being 48 years old, so this must have been taken when he was a good deal younger.
