A photo of actress Anna Marie "Patty" Duke - as Cathy or Patty? :) If you are part of the Boomer generation, you know immediately.
Anna Marie "Patty" Duke was a child actress on "The Brighter Day" (a soap opera) in the late 1950's. She went on to star in tv's "The Patty Duke Show" (shown here), "The Miracle Worker" on Broadway and in the movies (winning an Academy Award). She continued acting throughout her life.
She was also an heroic survivor of bipolar disorder, becoming an advocate for others in her later years. She is survived by 3 sons and 3 granddaughters.
Loved seeing her in everything she did. Same age, we have been through a lot. We will always enjoy reruns and repeat movies she was in. Thanks for all you gave us, Patty.
She was neither of those characters, neither reflected her own personality. She was a fantastic actress who happened to be bi polar. She should have a room full of emmys.
You were always an inspiration to me Patty. I can't believe you are no longer with us. I followed you from your "Patty Duke" teenage shows to all the fabulous movies you have starred in. You showed so much talent! You were a courageous person and gave so much! RIP💜
♡So sad she is gone so soon...she blessed us with her presence in this life...she was a voice for many in so many ways...Thank You, Anna Marie "Patty"♡
I was on a train from Philadelphia to Boston in 1968. I was wearing a pea- jacket suit in medium blue. I was on this slow moving, crowded train because there had been a blizzard the day before and no planes were flying along the East Coast.
It was standing room only and I was sitting on my suitcase.
A man was staring at me for the longest yime, making me very uncomfortable so I finally said, Why are you staribg at me?
He said " You're Patty Duke,
aren't you?"
I said , " Absolutely NOT!"
When we arrived in NYC after 4 hours, I got his seat.
The 1960's were years of great change: Protests (Vietnam War, Free Speech, Civil Rights), assassinations (JFK, Martin Luther King Jr, Bobby Kennedy), conflict (the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Cold War, ...

I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come.
I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.
