Outlaws of the Old West - The Dalton Gang Coffeyville Kansas
These outlaws were part of the Dalton Gang that was wiped out in Coffeyville Kansas on October 5th 1892 during their daylight robbery of two banks. The Dalton Gang was notoriously famous in Oklahoma for holding up trains and many murders. They successfully evaded authorities for a year and a half which led to a bit too much self confidence.

On October 5th 1892 they attempted a daylight robbery of the First National and Condon Banks in their old hometown of Coffeyville at the same time. Two of the Dalton brothers-Bob and Emmett-headed for the First National, while Grat Dalton led Dick Broadwell and Bill Powers in to the Condon Bank. One of the townspeople recognized a member of the gang, and while the gang split up to rob both of the banks the townspeople surrounded both banks at the front & back entrances and shot them as they attempted to escape.

Every member except for Emmett Dalton was shot and killed. Emmett was wounded and sentenced to life in prison but after 14 years he won parole. He eventually landed a role as a screenwriter in Hollywood, CA leveraging his experience in the Wild West. He died at the age of 66 in 1937.

Outlaws were shot and killed in the Old West then put on display as a sort of 'crime deterrent'. Taking photographs of dead outlaws was a common practice: My own great-grandfather, whose father was a Marshall, had many of these types of photos in his family album.
Date & Place: in Coffeyville, Kansas 67337, United States

On October 5, 1892, the Dalton Gang was in a shoot-out at a bank in Coffeyville, Kansas. Their specialty was robbing banks and trains and they had decided to try a big heist - 2 banks at once. The townspeople fought back and 4 members of the gang were killed - Grat and Bob Dalton, Dick Broadwell and Bill Powers (shown). Emmet Dalton (not shown) was shot 23 times and after being paroled from prison, he became a real estate agent, author and actor in Hollywood. Two members of the gang survived because they were waiting several miles away with fresh horses, but the gang was wiped from existence.
This is part of the Dalton Gang they were ambushed in Coffey , Kansas during a robbery.

Serious question here, not a joke but if the gang pictured above was ambushed and shot and killed why are they all in handcuffs?
I don't think that is handcuffs, but their hands were tied together like that to hold them in place. I've seen it in other photos with explanations.
Magnifying glass looking at the pic looks like handcuffs - especially on the fellow at the far right - notice the shiny reflection. Still possibly put on after death (to hold hands together.)

I know! My great-grandfather's father (so he says) was a lawman in Montana a little earlier than this. His family album was full of (often riddled with bullets) dead outlaws. Common at the time. This is a historical photo.
Totally agree Sharon. Instagram did the same thing (of course since owned by Facebook). You should see the restrictions on advertising right now...Anything remotely political or health related is seriously scrutinized at the moment.

The Eagles recorded a song about the Doolin-Dalton gang (also known as the Wild Bunch).

Another brother, Bill Dalton, quit his position as a member of the California state legislature and joined his brothers in the Dalton Gang. Bill Dalton and Bill Dooliin were the one holding extra horses a few miles away during the robbery that killed Bob and Grat.

After Grat and Bob were killed, Bill formed the Wild Bunch gang with Bill Doolin.

The Dalton brothers' mother was the aunt of Cole and Jim Younger, who were also outlaws.

I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come. I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director
My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.
