People didn't generally smile in the more formal pictures. It looks like that's not really the car they're driving...the headlights look drawn on. Many of the photos of my parents, aunts, and uncles from before 1920didn't have them smiling, and my grandparent's photos (they were born in the mid-1800's) showed them very serious, like this couple. Awkward moment, too...people knew what went on during a honeymoon, and it was embarrassing for a lot of women who knew that people knew what was going to happen. A different age and attitude...very uptight and prim.

People had to hold an expression for a few seconds and nothing looks worse than forced frozen smile. So they usually looked unsmiling... Or maybe they were just uncomfortable.. Some photos I have the subjects look apprehensive - and many people only had formal photgraphs taken on special occasions like weddings, etc.

They didn't smile in photographs or earlier paintings because their teeth were bad.
Unfortunately it was not happily ever after. They had one infant that died at birth or premature. My Great Uncle Otis died in 1918 and Anna never remarried. She passed in 1966.
