Still looking very much in love. Couples today could take lessons from them.. most hardly stay in love and marriage 5 years. Why waste the time and money on a wedding. I have shoes older than that, that I love. Sad...
This couple had lived through WWII They must have been proud that they were no longer under Hitler's threat and were able to truly celebrate their life!
wow! what hard times they must have gone through! married in 1899 and 50 years later! can imagine all the things they went though w/ that being the biggest time period for the biggest changes. not to mention w/ the great depression. and the changes of technology. I'd love to hear their conversations!!
I believe they had rather good lives. He was an agricultural teacher and farmer, and she inherited the family farm. Norway was not really affected by the first world war, unless you worked at sea, and they were not particularily affected by the second world war. They had some trouble following the depression of 1929, but managed to keep the farm, and having a farm was a big help during the second world war. Oliv was a keeper of tradition and old norwegian farm culture, and a fantastic storyteller, and they were both well respected in their community. I believe Paul's biggest sorrow in life was the death of Oliv, apparently he grieved deeply, and murmured reapetedely "oh Oliv oh Oliv". He died less than a year after her. She died at the age of 85, and he at 87.
Paul Øvergaard got the King's Medal of Merit in gold in 1946. He was a farmer at the farm Skøien which his wife had inherited. He sat as a member of Hedmark Agricultural Society Board, and for some periodes as the leader of the board, and he was a teacher at the Jønsberg agricultural college.
From Romedal local history book: "Here on this farm the women - at least from 1830 onwards, have entered so significantly into the limelight that it is not possible to get past. They have been more than adept and have known joy from standing at the helm. Kristine Olsdatter did not give up the farm as long as she lived. Karen Kristoffersdatter was not less skillfull than her mother in law, and after her death in 1879, she was probably the one who made the decisions. Karen Schøyen did not give away the authority over the farm as long as she lived. Her daughter Oliv got married early 1899 to Paul Øvergaard from Stange; but Karen Schøyen retained the authority over the farm. Oliv Olsdatter Øvergaard was in all her ways and manners an example of good, old Norwegian farming culture. With psychic memory she could tell about life in ages gone by, - at work and celebrations, in grief and joy. She had rich tradition to draw upon, and she kept them up with style and hospitality. Her spiritual vitality she kept to the last. Those who heard her tell stories will never forget the nice, lovable old lady.»
Coming out of the Great Depression, the world faced another challenge in the 1940's: World War II. Although the war began in the 1930's, it expanded and gained in ferocity (and atrocities) in the 194...
Antique and old photos showing weddings and anniversaries through the centuries.
Did you know that the white wedding dress was popularized in the West by Queen Victoria in the 1800's? In the East, a red wedding dress is considered good luck.
