It's not that they are unhappy. It took a long while to take a picture. How do you think a toddler would look to sit for a 10+ minute picture even now. Lol just because a person is not smiling doesn't mean they are unhappy.
Maybe they are confused.?? I'm sure most have never seen a camera and they probably were never really made to all sit in one place completely still unless for church or some other grownup thing. They were all probably like why?? But we're probably not allowed to ask questions. Lol

Smiling for photos is a relatively new thing. And what was said above about the length of time the children had to keep still is true. I'm amazed they are standing as still as they are. Also to clarify, the difference between a rooming house and a boarding house is that with a rooming house you rented a room or suite of rooms but did not expect "board" (meals) to be included. A boarding house usually served single males and meals were provided once or twice a day. These were inexpensive lodgings for workers in industrial areas.
