This is Mary Ann (Jones) Lewis, 1880. No biographical data on her other than she lived in Wales (if you know something about her, please add it to her biography). She sure looks spiffy! Mary Ann Jones is such a common name in Wales - does anyone else have a grandmother named Mary Ann Jones? (Mine was Mary Ann (Jones) Tasker.)
I also remember elderly ladies in the 1950's saying how those 12" hat pins also were used to jab "gentlemen" who got too "friendly" on a street car. Those hat pins served as self defense for the ladies.
I like to make hat pins but 12 inch? I wish I knew where to find the pins for that so I could decorate them with my beads and stones and gems! Does anyone know where I can get them?
Given that it's 1880, and she looks to be at least late teens, "does anyone have a grandmother" doesn't work! Does anyone have a great grandmother, at least!
Ree Young You have to be really "up there" in order to have a grandparent born before 1865. My oldest grandparent was born in 1866, but I'll be 80 in just a few months. Our generational links to the 19th century are fading fast!
My mother was born in 1908, the second youngest in a very large family. Many of her siblings were already adults when she was born. Then, although she married my dad at the age of 16, she had a number of miscarriages over the years before finally, at the age of 40, having me.
My dad was born in 1902. He was the eldest in a big family, but he was 46 when I was born. His younger siblings all had their own children by that time.
That means I have first cousins and some of their children (first cousins once removed) on both sides who are even older than I am.
My parents were as old as some people's grandparents.
In fact, my dad had retired from his machinist job and went to work part-time because, in his 60's, he still had a teenager to raise.
Other factors besides just being very old can make the difference.
