Its not just the stern look its the dress she's wearing also. It just looks like the type of dress a teacher would wear back then to look nice but still she didn't play.
I posted this photo...she was my husband's 3rd great grandmother and apparently a wonderful woman.

People looked this way in old time photographs because it took a long time for the film to expose. If they moved, the picture would blur. So a lot of the time they "froze" instead of a more natural smile.

People did not bare their teeth back then for photos to reveal a "natural smile". This was not only for the technical reason you cite, but also it was considered unattractive, coarse and common to take a photo with one's teeth showing like piano keys, as is popular today. Frankly I think they were right.

Very elegant looking and proper! Beautiful dress. Her hands look like she had to work hard during her life. Wondering if she made her dress? She had a beautiful figure...still small waisted and proportional for her years. Obviously she had good genes!

Equally interesting is the chair she is sitting in ! Anybody familiar with the style.....i have never come across one in my years as a dealer. Comments welcomed !
I remember we had a chair like that at my grandmothers lake house in the seventies with leather upholstery and brass like buttons lining it edges.

I had one similar that passed down from my great grandfather. Circa 1860 The back & seat were leather it was paired with a library table & rocking chair they now reside with my son.

Carolyn Stephenson You may want to photograph the pieces...measure them and go to library looking for books Roycrofters or furniture from the Frank Lloyd Wright era. They could be original pieces. Happy hunting !

Collar fairly typical for the times...women kept very covered up...and detachable collars could cover any number of dresses. As to her hands...they look arthritic and posed the way a lady placed her hands to look relaxed and proper even today.

She actually looks good for a 70 year old woman from this time. And she has kind eyes which have seen a lot. She was a young woman in her 20's during the Civil War; it wasn't easy for her or her family.
