You can tell that this girl comes from a wealthy family, might be an only child, is lovely to look at, spoiled, and has a great deal of confidence--just look at the expression on her face, the stance, she is "IT" and she knows it! I'm pretty sure she had a wonderful life!

Maria Poirson Carbonell is my grandmother. She was born in Barcelona in 1904 and she died in Masnou (a little village near Barcelona) in 1988. Although she was born in a wealthy family, she didn’t have an easy life. Her mother died of typhoid when she was two years old and she was raised by the housekeeper who got married to Maria’s father in 1919. In 1924, her brother, Carles, died in the Rif War and in 1926 her father died of a heart attack. After the death of her father Maria had to left her house and was in need to seek employment for survive. She worked as a seamstress and in 1936 she got married to Dalmacio Coll. They had two daughters, Teresa Maria and Camila (my mother) and they had to work very hard to get ahead especially during the Spanish Civil War and the postwar .

Thank you for sharing! I have a picture of my grandmother when she was about this age. She I is holding a beautiful doll....but her family was poor, the doll belonged to a neighbor who let my grandmother hold it for her picture.
I love and collect old photos.....and usually don't know their history. Thank you again for sharing your grandmother's story.

This photo is so unique..unlike today wealthy people were few and far between back then. This shows how wealthy this family was..I have never seen such a beautifully dress child. Every detail is perfect..from head to toe..look at her shoes and socks with the bows..her doll was obviously made to the little girl's likeness. Again something only a chosen few had. This little girl is beautiful regardless of her clothing..look at her beautiful features..she looks happy and loved to me..not spoiled..but has lived a wonderful live not wanting for food and the basics of life like most during that era. Glad she had a wonderful time because life drastically changed for her with all of the losses she suffered..especially loosing her mother so young..I am glad she had all that she had at the time and was innocent of pain and suffering..until a short time later in her life..This is like the American Girl dolls of today..dresses match with children's clothing also..and expensive..I know I have been getting those items for my granddaughter..x0x0x0x0x.
