Until about ten years ago, students at the furthest-out rural high school were allowed to commute by horse. Too much playing around with the horses was a problem though ;)

Where I come from (Greece), I think they used donkeys more. Back then in poor rural areas, most of the students had to walk a considerable distance, usually barefoot to go to school.

My grandma did the same in the Sandhills of NE. She was given a room at a private home, a horse and supplies for the school. She was all of 16 years old.

She would talk about how she was afraid of the older boys because they were older and much bigger than her. Most families in the area only allowed sons to attend 2-3 months a year so she was teaching 18 year olds how to read. It was also her responsibility to split logs for the pot belly stoves and get the school warm before kids arrived. She was at school before Sun rise and not home until sunset.

My mother was a teacher about 1918 and road horseback to her schoolhouse. I still have the books she used while studying for her certification. She had kids from six to 18 in a one room schoolhouse.

Yes, and when my husband and I moved to the Marshall Islands for two years I used her textbooks to keep our then four year old daughter occupied when she was "bored".

Let me know if you ever want to get rid of those books. I taught for 30 yr. and my passion is old textbooks, esp. reading books. (It's a long shot, but had to ask. I will gladly pay!)
