Those neck lines would drive me insane. I cant stand stuff around my neck, cant wean necklaces or t-shirts for that matter. :)

I totally agree.. got a bit of a headache going on, and seeing that and pondering what it'd feel like to be strapped in those .. torture device dresses, made my headache worse...

Most people didnt smile in those days cause of their teeth ...I could not imagine the weight of those dresses being in all day...and I agree..HOT!!

Magnus came to Australia from Denmark in about 1860 for the gold rush. He didn't find gold but was a successful farmer

My goodness whoever designed clothes for women in those days didn't want women to be very comfortable or even nice looking. They had to wear those corsets too so they couldn't even breathe!

Designed to make the waist look that much smaller, but if I had to carry around all that material and padding all the time, I truly would have the "vapors".

They wore corsets so tite some times they fainted but liked big butt bussles. N big shoulders just wanted tiny waists they set posed several minutes for cameras back then is why there were no smiles all facial muscles had remain still

I can't imagine being a menopausal woman with hot flashes back in those days. I'm sure many of them fainted from the heat.

People wore more Clothing at one time ,but had Less outfits . Clothing cost more and was mostly Homemade . These people are in their "Sunday Best" not Everyday wear .
Gorgeous photo I wonder how they washed those dresses none of my older photo's have the people smiling. Getting everyone ready would have taken a lot of time. I live in Shepparton and when it is Hot it is very hot. but very cold here at the moment.

If you mean Riedel Glassware, I don't know. Some of their ancestors spelt their name with one 'l' ie Riedel

The amount of fabric that went into those clothes...and so many of them were made especially for each woman...very few off-the-rack clothes. How the women survived in the heat I don't know!
