A photo of Lyon Gardiner Tyler Jr, grandson of President John Tyler.
Lyon Tyler's grandfather, President Tyler, was born just under 1 year after George Washington was inaugurated as the 1st President of the United States. This means that just 3 generations of this branch of the Tyler family has seen the entire history of the United States of America. And Lyon's younger brother is still with us.
The 10th President of the US was John Tyler (born 1790) who was a lifelong friend of Thomas Jefferson. On September 26, 2020, John Tyler's *grandson*, Lyon Gardiner Tyler, Jr., died. This branch of the Tyler family, from John Tyler's birth until today (there is one grandson still with us) spans the time from George Washington's presidency to our 45th president- in just 3 generations. When was your grandfather born? Bet it wasn't 1790!
My paternal grandfather was born in 1874, and my maternal grandfather was born in 1868. Not as impressive as a grandfather who was around when George Washington was living!

Lyon Gardiner Tyler, Jr. was the grandson of President John Tyler and the son of President Tyler's 13th child (of 15), Lyon Gardiner Tyler Sr., with President Tyler's second wife. Jr's mother was Sr's 2nd wife, Sue Ruffin.
Lyon Jr graduated from William and Mary College (where his father had been president) and went on to obtain a law degree from the University of Virginia. After practicing law for several years, he earned a doctorate in History from Duke University (1967) and taught History at the university level for 2 decades.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan and his younger brother.
I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come.
I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown.
