What do you think - First Communion? Ahhh . . . the days of short pants!
This was the common pose for First Holy Communion photos. My grandmother (1905) and grandfather (1901).

I bet this was the US? The boy with the short pants wasn't in the United States . . . and I think it was the 1960's . . .
It's very traditional. Worldwide and for many many years...

Yes, my son's First Communion was more like your photo - but what other religious rite could it be??

Could be Communion.. the ribbon looks like it has a photo of him at the end... I was raised in the Lutheran Church (Immanuel) and I did a Summer of Bible Study then was confirmed and did a dissertation.. only then could I take Communion.. I was 13 when it began.. probably 15 when I was actually confirmed...
My grandmother told me that it was a common practice in the early 1900s not to make your first communion until you are about 12 years old and then you were confirmed shortly after

Boys in wealthy families wore short pants, like royalty in Europe. Look at all the pictures of young John Kennedy, Jr.

Beautiful pictures. I believe that something profoundly important, and fundamentally needed for the common good, was lost when we- as a society- stopped celebrating important religious milestones for our children.

What has stopped is the 30 - 50 year olds going to Mass and bringing their children. Sports is more important to them.

Sweet
Speaking as a Catholic priest, this is definitely a 1st Communion photo. Look at the photo on the table, Jesus is giving a little boy communion. From the birth and death dates, I wouild say the young man is about 7 years old which means it would have been taken around 1968 and given his name, I would presume he was Polish. Some Polish folks still do 1st Communion this way. Lovely photo!!
Fabulous!
