Katherine Frances (Matko) Nicolaus on her wedding day, June 6, 1936. Taken in Monessen, Pennsylvania, where she was married to Jacob G. Nicolaus Jr. She had three children whose names were David, James, and Catherine Nicolaus.
Have you ever noticed that the brides went for white Lilies in the '30's. The stamen marks cloth like forever and nowadays they are a flower associated with Obituaries. :/
If you leave calla lilies (which the ones in her bouquet appear to be) out of water for about a half hour, you greatly reduce the chance of the stems leaking sap. Oddly enough, the stains lilies create don't show up until after the clothing has been washed!
All the time, Crystal, all the time. As a matter of fact, I always check my family tree "just in case", then usually spend a couple hours doing research. Genealogy - my "drug" of choice!
I have a cookbook that includes rationing-affected recipes from WWI. It's signed and dedicated from a mother to her daughter on the event of the daughter's marriage. On the fly leaves and inside covers, there are handwritten recipes, too. I would so love to be able to somehow go back in time to watch what this young couple's life was like and how their lives went on.
Yes, Crystal Tomlinson - I have wondered frequently about these peoples' lives. It always makes me sad to see the old pics and antiques, etc. when I go to antiques stores, because these things once were beloved of other people in other lifetimes.
from "findagrave.com" here's some info on this lovely lady! Katherine Frances Nicolaus, 74, of Monessen died on December 29, 1990 in Monessen after a lingering illness.
She was born on September 26, 1916, a daughter of the late Martin and Agata (Sostar) Matko.
Mrs. Nicolaus was a lifelong resident of Monessen and a member of St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church.
She was a homemaker, loving mother of three children and seven Grandchildren. She loved to bake and was a life long Quilter producing by hand many quilts of her own design and each one was made with someone in mind.
We ladies ALWAYS notice the shoes! Having said that, this is a beautiful photo and I definitely wonder what life they had, husband's job, children etc. Pity there isn't the photo of her in later life. I always find the changes fascinating.
I LOVE the veils even more than the dresses, but I have noticed that the brides of today have stopped wearing them. I wish they would still wear a veil when they get married; it's just so beautiful.
So pretty...and she lived so close to where I do. Life here was different then I guess, before the mines closed and places like Monessen became ghost towns.
In years gone by,, the bridal party went to a photographers studio to have pictures taken after the ceremony... Now the photographers come to the wedding and receptions. much better pictures. and of course lots more..
I wonder how many girls got to have real wedding dresses back in those days. I never asked my Grandma before she passed about her wedding. One of the few things I never thought to ask her about. :( However, her family was very poor, so I am sure she didn't. It would be fabulous though to see a wedding picture of her wedding. This girl's family must have been a little well to do.
