A photo of John Sidney McCain III - son and grandson of 4 star admirals in the U.S. Navy.
He attended the United States Naval Academy (graduating, as he joked, 5th from the bottom in his class in 1958 - he was a bit of a rebel) and after graduation became a naval aviator. In 1967, he requested combat duty and was assigned to an aircraft carrier in the Gulf in Tonkin. On October 26, 1967 his plane was shot down and he became a prisoner of war.
After 5 and a half years as a prisoner of war and being severely tortured, John was released. The physical effects of his torture lasted the rest of his life.
In the early 1980s, he entered politics in the state of Arizona, eventually becoming a U.S. Senator. While he was nominated for President by the Republican Party in 2008, he lost the race to Democrat Barack Obama. He remained the senior Senator from Arizona until his death from brain cancer in 2018.
Whether you agreed with his politics or not, Senator John McCain was an honorable and truthful man who represented his country with honesty and integrity. RIP John Sidney McCain III.

What business is it of yours if Carlotta Barnes supports Trump or not. That's NOT the topic. Trump is a lying, idiotic dolt, shall I continue............
KellieAnne Smith Foreman
You are clueless, she had a very wise approach, unlike yourself. READ THE DAMN TOPIC! She said nothing good or bad. Are you able to discern the difference. Read the dictionary, you might get educated.
Marci Sturgis took a very honorable approach!!!!!!
RIP Sir....at least now he doesn't have to watch Trump make an international mockery of the America he fought so hard for. Condolences to his family and friends.
John McStain was the Senator that sent his aide to come up with the Steele Dossier that has been proven false! And you say Trump is making an International mockery of this country?! Pull your head out of you fat a** Connie!
I met this man and talked with him three times and found him to be a person of deep conviction. I didn't always agree with him but I respected him and I was a Republican up till the last election. My prayers to his family and for Senator McCain, RIP and thank you for your service.
Jason Marler Oh I can handle the truth. I believe the man whom was a major republican which I am not is dead. So many people at his age will tell you when they are ready to die, they regret many things... I am sure he does. you are correct . I did not know him personally. I really don't care. I just feel that most people deserve some type of respect in death. Somebody somewhere loved him. So there you have it. I am not here , like a piece of cheese to be jumped on by all of the little "rats" coming out of the internet woodwork. Good Grief.
It is sad for his family, however given this man’s history of getting people killed by giving up military secrets, and wreck-less handling of aircrafts she doesn’t deserve my respect and will not get it.
Brian McTamaney How unfortunate that you are unable to understand the complexities of our human lives. That level of judgment has no place here. John McCain gave more for his country that, apparently, you cannot comprehend. What a shame. All of our lives are complex, filled with all kinds of choices, decisions and experiences. I would think an American would show some compassion and empathy.
If I was in his shoes, I wouldn’t sell out my country and get my fellow soldiers killed. I also wouldn’t leave my wife who just became paralyzed. I also remember what was said about him by the same side praising him today when he was running for president. Sorry! He was not a hero, and I don’t buy into fake respect.
I was home for lunch the day he walked across that bridge on crutches. His wife and kids stood by him, while he was gone. But yes, she was in an auto accident and he left her for the catsup queen. I personally never forgave him for that even though the wife and kids did. I surely wouldn't wish cancer on my worst enemy though.Took my husband also.
Linda Shockey I know a lot more than those praising him. For the record I don’t wish cancer on anyone, but he was not a “great American hero” far from it!
Scott Lendrum so, you go onto my page read two of my interests and think you know me. Got it! What McCain did and is responsible for is something I would never do because I’m not a POS. There’s more to his story than the edited “unicorn and rainbows” version.
You are correct I don’t know you....however...
1) a man who served the USA in congress for 20+ years has died
2) from your profile you’ve neither served in the military in an overseas combat zone.....so perhaps best not to say what you would or wouldn’t do in his shoes....if you have served in foreign combat zones and been captured and been released not having given any of your captors a shred of information ...then I’ll say kudos
Well, again...you don’t know me. However, what I know is research. And I know Mccain is no hero.
A “war hero” doesn’t finish 894th out of 899 and still get stationed at a Navy champagne unit and promoted ahead of all but two of his 898 other classmates. Primal aged brats do that.A “war hero” doesn’t crash three U.S. Navy jets out of sheer incompetence and ineptitude, including two during non-combat training sessions. A “war hero” doesn’t get written up on drunk-and-disorderly, fraternization, disobeying orders, and insubordination charges more than two dozen times in less than three years. A “war hero” doesn’t get promoted to squadron commander of the air field named after his own grandfather immediately after crashing his third airplane. A “war hero” doesn’t have all the military records that cover his time in Vietnam and all disciplinary actions against him censored and sealed “as a matter of national security.” A “war hero” doesn’t get 28 medals awarded all after-the-fact “for bravery” for no other reason than being shot down and captured and then go on a celebrity public relations tour because he’s the son of two acclaimed Navy admirals. A “war hero” doesn’t repeatedly cheat on the wife who’s back in the states waiting for him, and then cheat on her more when he returns to the states, and then divorce and abandon her. A “war hero” doesn’t systematically vote against every single pay and benefit increase for military and veterans throughout his entire political career, all the while claiming to be “the soldier’s Congressman,” and then take credit for the passage of a G.I. benefits bill that he voted AGAINST. I could go on!
Point is, that facts are better than fiction. When you research those that want to be you leader you generally find them not to be worthy of the job. Cancer is a horrible disease. It’s awful that his family lost a father and and husband, but I will not fall into this hypocritical butt kissing that happens every time someone with fame and a questionable background dies.
True, and honorable men or people in general are not conservative to any degree because that would be anti-human welfare. The biggest hypocrites, liars, cheaters, the most destructive, and violence are created by the human filth party. You wouldn't happen to be one of those types would you? And be a hypocrite... No!!!!! Of course not.
Just maybe, his newly paralyzed wife and him did not get along and actually had no love in the marriage prior to her horrible affliction. Who are we to judge? If I had a terrible loudmouth, abusive spouse that I didn't love, you best believe I wouldn't stay with him just because he was bedridden. Good Grief... Maybe Brian you are priving to something from his marriage of over what 40 years ago. I agree with Linda above... I hope you got to go out last night and have some fun!!
Lisa Marie his marital indiscretions are quite secondary for me. There are certainly a lot of points in his life that make me believe that falls hero worship just because he’s dead isn’t right. And since you’re so hot to know about my personal life, I had a quiet evening at home last night after running errands all day. don’t always have to go out.
Scott Lendrum
You're a chauvinistic, selfish man to say such trash. His wife is injured & in a wheelchair. If his character is weak in regard to his wife, how can his character be strong for our country, & so what about his fighting for our country, my 2 older brothers did, too, twice & they never left their wives, ever. My oldest brother passed in '97 @ 55, my other brother is nearly 75 but he is still with his 1st & only wife. When I said MY vows I kept them as did my husband who died in '09 @ age 58. He died of sepsis & I had to be the one to authorize removal of his life support. I miss him terribly & I was a loyal wife, friend & companion. Maybe he should have taken his wedding vows to heart. I can't trust anyone with no spine or character.
Jan Mortimer ...exactly he was cheating on her prior to leaving her after the accident, and that's just aside to the awful things he did as a soldier and politician.
Linda Shockey
You're dead wrong
Brian McTamaney may be young but I am here to tell you him & Trump are associated with the 3 stooges plus. Argue with me, I am in my late 60's & both of my brothers served in the Viet Nam action twice. They never left their wives. My oldest brother died in '97 @ 55, his wife never left his side. If that dolt, McCain (dead or alive) can't be loyal to his wife, how can he be loyal to the USA, whom he claimed to love, hero..............give me a break. Weakling, yes!!!!!
Susie Stoddard
I was acutely aware of the Viet Nam action because my two older brothers served twice. They stayed with their 1st wives, ran their own businesses & raised their children to be good citizens. My husband served during the Viet Nam action & we were together for 30 years & married for 27. He died @ 58, we married in our early 30's & were very loyal to each other. Judgements are all too quickly over looked. Research the REALITIES then hunker back to your delusional idea of non-judgemental reality. He was NO hero & don't put him (or anyone) on a pedestal.
Lisa Marie
Quite the narcissist. The Viet Nam Action was quite a mess full of lies, dishonesty, disloyal & non-heros. John McCain has quite a rap sheet. Spineless with no character. Let me be clear, I can't trust someone who lies about anything, especially themselves. Reality can be twisted & he sure had a twist. My son died 7/17 @ 40 of cancer, he thought he was sick because of how badly he treated me. No girlfriend, wife or children. My older sister, 73, died 8/14/18 of COPD. They were both horrific people. They were both very overwhelmed with Demons. There are many intricate other things I could say, but I won't. I was shocked at the amount of friends who showed @ his memorial (my son & sister were both monsters). So many had the best regard & love for him. I never said a negative (true, quite negative) comment about him to them. I want to remember the sweet little boy he was. My sister, that's just as bad, both were narcissists as was McCain & yourself. McCain built himself up on lies. He was with his last wife because she wasn't in a wheelchair. Honor, no. Hero, no. Spine, no. Character, no. I was an adult in those Viet Nam Action days, you probably weren't even aware of the Viet Nam Action. You judged Brian, yourself, at the end of your post. Ya can't speak out of both sides of your mouth & be believed or have character.
Annette Pilette Schwartz, Songbird got that name given to him by fellow prisoners and have come out telling their side of what McCain did to them. All those records are sealed because President Nixon pardoned McCain. Also read all of Brian McTamaney’s post on McCains service record. Willie Clinton and Obama never serve in the military so why is it a problem with you cause Trump didn’t serve. Whether you like it or not he is YOUR President.
Ornella L. Pensyl Not at the time it wasn’t!! His kids didn’t reconcile with him until after 8 years passed. Don’t sugar coat it! He cheated on her prior to findingCindy
Erika Kielhorn Carlin Erika snopes is a proven liberal lying machine. Regardless I had never heard of the song bird story BUT it is fact that Mccain was a show off and IS responsible for over 100 killed . Do the research.
I'm am so sad a real patriot is gone ,I want to say thank you so very much ,for being a decent human being ,that did not let power go to your head ,I pray for your family, but your in good shape now, amen
I didn't agree with a lot of his politics, but I watched my mother die of cancer of the lung and brain, so my heart goes out to his loved ones. He is at peace now and I pray they find comfort in their memories. I think today is not the day to rehash what he did wrong. Rest in peace, Senator McCain.
Susie Stoddard
In regard to Jill Tucker, you're a really nasty mouthed person. She said something nice. You attacked Susie for no reason, none. Jesus, you're truly crass & quite negative!!!!!! She was very nice. You, not so much............
A man of honor and truth who taught us what it meant to: "fall in love with my country." He understood the importance of partition politics and compromise. Some of his longest friends were long time Democrats.
Barry Ray Guess you forgot about how people in Congress would find ways to compromise, in the past? That didn't change their party affiliation but it did show the citizens they were reasonable and honorable people.
RIP MR. JOHN. MCCAIN
Prayers for you family
Our God Is A MERCIFUL
God For this We All must be grateful for,
On this day John McCain
Forever rest in peace 🙏
Good man. Disagreed with some of his politics but admired how he conducted himself. Trump should be ashamed (if he had a soul) for treating him so disrespecctfully. Trump -Draft dodging, jealous little man.
People. Really? In today's Political Arena with the LIAR, Cheat, Crimminal and, Nut Job Aficionado, who we have ruining our country right now? Have none of you learned the Lesson of Today? Politicians LIE, CHEAT, commit crimes against the people they are elected to "Serve", Rape our country...and, screw our women (Kennedy, Clinton & McCain oh hell, all of them!) - not their wives, our citizens and children (in Clinton's case). It's called POLITCS. Grow up - mature - it get's so boring reading little nieve minds! Go read about Cindy McCain then come back and tell me all about what a GREEEAAAT Man McCain was. I have a heart - I didn't agree with his politics, but he did make some rather Patriotic Speeches that raised Americans up - as opposed to beating Americans up - Like our current President does!! So, he deserves two Rotunda, Pomp and Ceremony Wakes -- because he was a good speech maker. Lot of good words will be said about him, except by Trump who will continue to lambast a dead man - that's just Trump's "style", a real Low Life that one. But, people truely, you must see truth to know truth. Poor McCain was simply a man...like any other, nothing special - service and legacy? Well, no less than any other POW right? Some gave their Life - he was lucky.
So glad he is dead. I hope the men he killed on the flight deck drag his cowardly a** down to hell. F*** him. Songbird, traitor, fake, loser, and Democrat c*** sucker.
Alan Confer You, young man need to read up on his history during his military "career". You may have a change of heart and voivce your opinion of me with ledss vigor and compassion for those mean on that ship he so obnoxiously landed on. Their lives are gone, and we are left with sadness and memorieds of our loved ones.
By your comment, it sounds like you knew him on a personal level, and that you also served in our armed forces. I for one would never say someone's service to our great nation as a joke.
How ignorant of you to post this on the day he died. Unless you were there, to personally witness what is gossiped about - you know nothing. You have no concept of combat. Again, beyond ignorant.
There is always someone that have need to be nasty and do it with no filters. I had to look at this person's profile and it explains it all. What have you done to contribute to your community and country besides whine? Go out do something selfless and worthwhile on your own time and expense for the betterment for others and be bigger and better than McCain then you can be as nasty as you want.
He stood up and stopped the repeal when it would have been easier to walk the party line. He had manners, education, discipline and a commitmeant to our true political system--and a conscience. None of these are present in the present occupant of the highest office.
Jason Marler WTF. I am a Democrat... I don't care one flying rat's a** about his personal life. He did serve this country. He was an American that deserves a level of respect. I did not vote for him ever. I just think he was a good person because he hated Donald Trump.
Taira: I'm embarrassed for your lack of manners and civility, especially as a woman. Apparently, you have no ability to comprehend the depravity you've just shown.

And on my mother's New England roots - well, too numerous to name since she descends from Mayflower passengers as well as Dutch East India captains who arrived with their families before the Mayflower landed further north than was planned. :) I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Director). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come.
I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in Campbell (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our current Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director
