A photo of James Scott Bumgarner (James Garner) born April 7, 1928, taken in the 1950's. He was born in Norman, Oklahoma, the youngest of 3 boys. His mother died when he was 5 and he and his brothers went to live with relatives until his father remarried. His relationship with his step-mother was rocky at best, and her actions led to a divorce by his father.
He joined the Army during the Korean War and won a Purple Heart during that conflict. After the war, he turned to acting, legally changing his name to "Garner".
He is probably best known to Baby Boomers as Bret Maverick on "Maverick" and Jim Rockford in "The Rockford Files". My favorite movie role of his was in "Support Your Local Gunfighter" - he was good looking and funny!
James Garner died on July 19, 2014 in Brentwood Hollywood of natural causes. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
This weekend we lost James Scott Bumgarner, aka James Garner. Perhaps best remembered as Bret Maverick on Maverick and Jim Rockford in The Rockford Files, he will be missed.
He was always handsome & he was such a gentle man. He was married to Lois all their adult lives. I wish they had made a lot of copies of him. I will miss him dearly.
Will miss him. Such a handsome man. Enjoyed his movies. Will truly be missed. We're losing alot of actors we grew up with. Don't make them like that anymore!!
I remember having such a huge crush on him when I was growing up...I adored and admired James Garner up to the very end. He was truly a gem of a Man. ♥
We are losing all of our great actors. I grew up watching him on TV and movies, especially with Doris Day in them. RIP to a fine man and a wonderful actor, Godspeed sir.

I'm a Founder of AncientFaces and support the community answering questions & helping members make connections to the past (thus my official title of Founder & Content and Community Support ). For me, it's been a labor of love for over 20 years. I truly believe with all of my heart that everyone should be remembered for generations to come.
I am 2nd generation San Jose and have seen a lot of changes in the area while growing up. We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US. I am so very proud of my hometown. For more information see Kathy - Founder & Content and Community Director My family began AncientFaces because we believe that unique photos and stories that show who people are/were should be shared with the world.
