OMG#O can't look at any of these old portraits without thinking they are all post mortem .I made the mistake of looking up more of them after the post this morning.....so many of them were children....very sad and strange...I mean who came up with the idea...let's prop up these dead people to make it look like they're still alive and take a picture of them...

I almost did the same thing after the post this morning but stopped myself because I remembered years ago I seen some of them and they were mostly children. My suggestion is to not look them up anymore! :)

Regarding taking pictures of dead children. . . back then people didn't have cameras, nor did they have that many pictures of any one. I have pictures of my sister, taken in her casket. She died at nine months of age, two years before I was born. They are the only pictures I have of her . . . the only ones my parents had. Without them I would have no idea what she looked like. Those pictures you talk about are not sad; they are attempts to have something to remember these lost children by. They represent love and loss.

I know, I don't think the ones in the coffin are weird, but the propped up ones....I was thinking abut that too... I mean how could the thing that they showed actually hold a dead person up? it would have to have much more support than stand they showed that was used, I think it was a tool, to help a person to stay still (a live person) bc of the long exposure time. I now question if this was really done..the standing post mortems, it doesn't seem physically possible to me? I'm not usually a sceptic, but I do always wonder how things work....
